EXPANDING LOCAL PRODUCTS: KATMON-BASED PRODUCT DIVERSIFICATION
August 6, 2026 | Poblacion Covered Court, San Andres, Romblon
The Department of Trade and Industry β Romblon, through the Negosyo Center San Andres, successfully conducted the training entitled βExpanding Local Products: Katmon-Based Product Diversificationβ on August 6, 2026 at the Poblacion Covered Court, San Andres, Romblon. The activity was attended by 50 participants, including 27 members of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and 8 members from farmers and fisherfolks associations. The training aimed to assist agribusiness groups, processed fruit producers, potential entrepreneurs, and women in enhancing and diversifying their products through the innovative use of katmon fruit (Dillenia philippinensis).
The activity was guided by the expertise of Sr. Alma I. Mangao, who served as the Trainer and Resource Person. Messages of support were also delivered by Ms. Rachel F. Faderogaya (DSWD Project Development Officer II), Mr. J Vann Kylle T. Teologo (HVCDP Coordinator, Municipal Agriculture Office), and Mr. Denny H. G**o (representative, Municipal Mayorβs Office), emphasizing the collaborative effort behind this initiative.
Katmon, an indigenous fruit-bearing tree that grows abundantly in San Andres, particularly in barangays such as Agpudlos and Jun Carlo, has remained underutilized despite its rich health benefits and nutrients. The training bridged this gap by equipping participants with practical knowledge and skills in katmon product development.
As a result, participants successfully developed products such as katmon juice, candies, jam, tea, syrup, and vinegar. This collective effort highlights the potential of indigenous resources to be transformed into market-ready goods that strengthen local enterprises and create diversified livelihood opportunities.
This training reaffirmed the commitment of the Department of Trade and Industry β Romblon and its partner agencies to support local communities in utilizing indigenous resources, promoting innovation, and building sustainable enterprises.
