The Magical Retirement Fund

What is the magic number to reach in order to retire comfortably? 5 million? 10 million? 20 million? 50 million? Or maybe, 100 million pesos?

There are many variables to consider when trying to plan for retirement. A certain amount may be enough for some, too much for some or not enough for others.

Make saving for retirement a priority. Treat saving as a bill. Save first and spend the leftovers. This is a long-term goal. It will only happen if you invest early and often.

Do not use the retirement fund for gifts and vacations. Have a separate emergency fund. Never tap the fund unless there are no other options.

It takes great discipline and commitment to attain that magical retirement fund we want. Remember this, “The only person you can depend on to take care of your older you is your younger you.” So start saving and investing now!

Don’t Wait Until You Have “Enough” to Start Investing.

After paying for the essentials, such as housing, food, utilities, and transportation, you need to decide what to do with your discretionary income. Investing isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind, and if you really stopped to think about it, you might be putting off investing because you don’t think you have enough to start. Successful middle class families recognize that they may never feel financially “ready” to start investing. There will always be competing forces claiming rights to the money in your wallet. Make the decision to start today, with just a little bit. You can always add to it as your financial situation changes. What you can’t do is make up lost time. With interest rates as low as they currently are, that cash you have sitting in your savings account is likely losing purchasing power over time.
