As requested by my wife, I have decided to start Theme Gardens on this issue. Below I shall touch on the characteristics of a popular theme preferred by some of my clients and friends…
The Mediterranean Garden
This is a classic! Mediterranean inspired architecture calls for a garden that is warm and dry with fragrances of Lavenders (LAVANDULA), Culinary Herbs like Rosemary (ROSMARINUS), Italian Oregano (ORIGANUM VULGARE) and Thyme (THYMUS). Shrubs like Olives (OLEA EUROPAEA) and Citruses to further enhance a section. Conical shaped Shrubs and Trees like Italian Cypress (CUPRESSUS SEMPERVIRENS “STRICTA”), Date palm and Royal Palm (ROYSTONEA OLERACEA) to frame a view. Vines like grapes (VITIS) to provide shade to a destination. Go for ferns to soften a pebbled court yard and trailers to give character to a bare stone wall. Sunflowers (HEIANTHUS ANNUS) and Bougainvillea on a white wall for a classic Mediterranean look will also compliment the beauty of other hardscapes and soft implements. Bearded Irises will remind us of beautiful summers. A simple fountain can cool an open Patio. Terracotta pots, sea shells and mosaic art works are definitely inexpensive accents to enrich an already charming home with a proper Mediterranean Garden. Mixed match colors of Blue, White and Terracotta add to the charm as well.
We are very fortunate that with the tropical climate in our country many of the plant materials mentioned above are very abundant and will grow easily in the Philippines.
In the coming issues I shall be sharing the most classic Themes of gardens for all of us to ponder with. Themes like Natural, Formal, Japanese, Modern Asian, Cottage, Feng Shui, Eccentric/ Personal, Sanctuary and of course my favorite the Tropical Filipiniana Garden that best suits our climate.
A garden is supposed to make the dwellers and visitors feel better, sets the mood for special and unforgettable moments with loved ones and friends. Not an abode of pressure and additional unwanted errands.
Though I do believe, designing and constructing a gorgeous garden comes much from the “Inspirations” from within often times neglected by many. Inspirations from the beauty of Mother Nature, Love and Affection from family, intimate moments from our relationships and most of all…the guidance and the wisdom from our Creator….
“Life gets even better when viewed from wider a perspective… seeing things from a different angle make our life more exciting and far less boring… “
Have a Happy day!
