Best way to sponsor your spouse

If you want your spouse to stay with you in Canada, this is how to do it. Get them here as a visitor first. Submit the sponsorship application and then get them a work permit. If you can show proof of a pending sponsorship application and your spouse is living with you with valid status, then they qualify for an open work permit. The last few work permit applications that we did took about 4 to 5 weeks. This allows your spouse to stay and work in Canada while waiting to become a PR.

If you want to sponsor your parents, you’ll be waiting a while. Canada has officially paused this program until further notice. The main reason for this pause is to catch up on the backlog of applications they haven’t processed yet. We know many of you have been waiting a long time to sponsor your parents. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be with you in Canada. The Super Visa is designed to bring parents to Canada for an extended period; unlike a regular visitor visa, which only allows six months to stay, a Super Visa lets your parents stay up to five years. Consider the super visa if you want your parents to stay with you in Canada while waiting to sponsor them in the future.

We heard that the Canadian Immigration Office has a backlog of over 1 Million applications. Is it true? I’ve been waiting for more than 5 months to know the final decision on my visitor visa.

Yes, it’s true. Over 1 Million applications are backlog as of July 31, 2024. So, these applications will exceed the wait times that are stated on the Canada website. You can actually see the breakdown of the inventory online. For temporary resident applications, visitors, students, and workers, 51% of them are within the service standard. So basically, half of these applications are backlogged and experiencing delays. So, I am not surprised to hear that you’ve been waiting for 5 months for a visitor visa. For PR Applications, 61% of them are within the standard processing times. For citizenship, It’s 83%. Delays and long wait times are common with Canadian Immigration. If your application is taking too long, don’t assume it’s because something went wrong. It’s probably just delayed.
