Grabe, this hit home as a mom.
Being a “housewife” was never just staying at home, it’s raising values, shaping minds, and building the future every single day.
To all moms out there, working or at home… we are all generation shapers in our own way. 👩👧👦
THE TITLE "HOUSEWIFE" IS OFFICIALLY GONE IN DUBAI.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, has directed the Community Development Authority to replace the term "housewife" with a new title on all official documents.
The new term is "Generation Shaper."
The announcement was made on March 21, 2026, on Mother's Day in the UAE.
Sheikh Hamdan said mothers are the first school for their children, the place where children learn belonging, responsibility, and the values that shape strong nations. He added, "To all our mothers, thank you. You are the foundation of everything good."
The change is more than symbolic. It's being implemented across all official records, including Emirates ID cards, social programs, and public discourse.
The term "housewife" describes a location. It tells you where a woman is, but it doesn't describe what she does. "Generation Shaper" acknowledges the actual work. It recognizes that mothers aren't just staying at home. They're actively building society, teaching values, and molding the leaders of the future.
The directive makes this recognition official. It brings mothers' contributions out of the background and into the language of policy and public life.
This is part of the Dubai Social Agenda 33, which aims to position Dubai as a global leader in family stability and social development. Sheikh Hamdan has said that you cannot have a high-performing economy without high-performing citizens, and those citizens are shaped at home.
The Crown Prince has over 17 million followers on Instagram, which gives his endorsements significant cultural weight. By using his platform to champion this terminology, he's telling the younger generation of Emiratis, and the world, that being a stay-at-home mother is a career of the highest order.
Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, widely known as the "Mother of the Nation," echoed the sentiment. She described a mother's role as "a cornerstone of stability" and said they are "the foundation upon which tranquillity in homes is built." She extended her appreciation to every mother in the UAE and around the world.
Mansoor Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, brought the focus to everyday impact. He said mothers are the first guardians of family health, shaping behaviors, guiding decisions, and building the resilience of future generations.
This isn't the first time Dubai's leadership has introduced terms aimed at promoting dignity and inclusion. In 2017, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, officially introduced the term "People of Determination" to replace "people with special needs." The directive shifted the focus toward strength, achievements, and active participation in society. It has since been widely adopted across government entities and the wider community.
The message from Dubai's leadership is clear, mothers are not defined by a household label. They are recognized as the force that shapes families, values, and the future. Raising a generation is work that shapes the country itself.
