Originally devised in 1933 and performed over the telephone, the singing telegram was a clever concoction of Western Union. Since telegrams had long been associated with deaths or other bad news, the telegraph company used their singing telegram service to sway the image to something more positive. The first was delivered to singer Rudy Vallee on behalf of one of his fans. Usually comical in nature, singing telegram services are normally offered with your choice of performers in formalwear or a humorous costume such as a belly dancer, superhero or Sherlock Holmes.
