Most people buy fresh herbs at the grocery store every week and throw away the stems without realizing those scraps can regrow into unlimited free herbs on a kitchen windowsill. Basil cuttings placed in a glass of water sprout thick white roots within five days and can be transplanted into soil for a plant that produces all summer. Green onion bottoms with the roots still attached regrow to full size in a glass of water within ten days and can be cut and regrown repeatedly without ever buying another bunch. Cilantro stems with a few inches of stem left placed in shallow water regrow enough leaves for weekly use within two weeks. Mint cuttings root so aggressively in water that a single sprig becomes a full plant within a week and once potted it grows indefinitely. Rosemary cuttings stripped of lower leaves and placed in water take longer to root but once established produce a woody perennial bush that lasts for years. Lemongrass stalks with the bulb end intact placed in an inch of water send up new shoots within days and grow into tall productive clumps. Lettuce and romaine hearts with two inches of base left placed in shallow water regrow edible leaves within a week. Ginger root pieces with visible growth buds planted just below the soil surface in a pot sprout new shoots and produce fresh ginger within months. Celery bottoms placed in a shallow dish of water regrow a usable center cluster of stalks and leaves within two weeks. Free groceries growing from scraps you were about to throw away.
