One of the greatest Pianists ever.
Happy birthday to the great pianist Art Tatum, who was born in 1909! For many, Art Tatum's unparalleled facility on the keyboard place him as the greatest pianist in the art form's history. He drew inspiration from the works of early Jazz pianists, in particular the Stride Pianists. Diagnosed at an early age with only limited vision in his right eye, Tatum nevertheless developed the ability to play piano by ear. As a teen, he earned a daily program on a local Toledo, OH radio station, eventually attracting attention from musicians like Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson who toured through the area.In 1932, Tatum joined vocalist Adelaide Hall's band and relocated to NYC—where he made his first studio recordings—and later California. Tatum's burgeoning fame help propel him back to New York, where he was one of 52nd Street's most popular and well-paid acts and a fixture at Norman Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts.Tatum passed away at the age of 47, but he left behind a wealth of beloved recordings and his boundary-pushing style inspired future piano giants, including Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson.
