Leyte Landing Anniversary – October 20, 1944
Today, we commemorate the historic landing of General Douglas MacArthur and the Allied Forces at Leyte Gulf on October 20, 1944 — a decisive moment that marked the beginning of the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese occupation. This significant event set the stage for the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval engagement of World War II and the greatest in history in terms of total tonnage of ships sunk. It was a turning point that led to Japan’s eventual defeat and the end of nearly three years of occupation.
The MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park, located in Palo, Leyte, Eastern Visayas, stands as a tribute to this momentous chapter in Philippine history. Declared a national park on July 12, 1977, through Letter of Instructions No. 572 signed by President Ferdinand Marcos, it remains one of the region’s most prominent historical landmarks and tourist attractions.
