"Huwag ka kumuha ng insurance."

Yan mismo sinabi ko. 😅

From one of my insurance planning sessions this morning.

Mind you, itong client ko —

She's been looking for months. Already talked to 4 other agents. I'm the 5th.

After our assessment of her insurance needs, and showing her the best-fit options to address them, finally, she decided.

Sabi niya, that's the one she wants to get — because among everything she'd seen, it was the one that actually made sense. It was literally designed around her needs.

So, ayun, all set na, diba?

But then I told her —

I'll push you back on this. "Huwag ka muna kumuha ng insurance."

Why?

Because her emergency fund, at the moment, barely covers a month of her basic expenses.

And while I know insurance is important, having a separate, liquid safety net is basic foundation.

So we did a quick cash flow plan instead — how she can efficiently complete her emergency fund first.

Once that breather is built, we can now properly begin her insurance journey.

I've been having these conversations for over 8 years now.

And what I've learned is this: insurance planning isn't just about finding the right coverage for you.

It's making sure you have the right foundation to actually sustain it.

8 years ago today.

I met my first client.

Hindi ko pa alam paano mag-present. All I knew were the theories taught in trainings.

If I'll rate kung gaano ako ka-kabado that time — 9/10.

What if may tanong siya na hindi ko alam? What if may masabi akong mali pala? What if I mixed up the explanation?

So eto na. Here comes the actual meeting.
We're sat at the corner of some Starbucks in Makati.

It started well, surprisingly. We had a good chat in the first few minutes. I felt at ease, got some laughs here and there.

Until my fear came.

May tanong nga siya na hindi ko alam. I froze. Then spiralled — I mixed up some explanations, and ended up as confused as she was.

Kita ko sa face niya na wala rin siyang naintindihan, haha!

Nag-practice pa ako niyan before the meeting, ah!

After the meeting, I felt ashamed. Disheartened. Doubtful if kaya ko ba talaga sa industry na 'to.

But I tried again.

This time, I knew exactly what to improve on. And I intentionally applied what I learned.

I just kept going.

Fast forward today — eight years in — people trust me with:

Their millions. Their life-long savings. Their business decisions.

Something my Day 1 self wouldn't believe, if I told him this is what he'd be handling now.

So if there's one thing I'd say to that version of my self 8 years ago:

If you're failing, it means you're trying.
If you're failing, you just opened up an opportunity to grow — take it.

After 8 years of having these conversations, here's what I've learned:

That confidence to decide? No amount of blogs, comparison sites, or AI tool can give it with certainty.

What answers it is a real conversation with someone qualified — someone who listens before recommending anything.

That's what insurance planning is.
