We need to STOP using the term natural disaster. There’s nothing natural about disasters. It’s NOT an act of nature nor an act of god.

Today we understand that disasters happen when we lack the capacity to adapt, prepare, respond, and recover from the impacts of a hazard. It might be due to our geographic exposure, socio-econmic status, poor planning and decision-making, or even, governance (or the lack of it). It is a complex and compounding interaction of elements.

This is not just an academic discussion on the proper use of terminology. It is how the phrase “natural disaster” often denote inaction. By using the right terminology (whether you are referring to natural hazard or disaster), we are sending the message that we can do something about our situation; that DISASTERS ARE PREVENTABLE.
