"What is your fight? Make it personal because you make it real." πŸ’¬

Of all the things said in Session 5 this Saturday, this is the one that stayed with us.

In a conversation about AI governance, education systems, and regional policy, it would have been easy to stay abstract. But Carlo Fernando of the SEAMEO Secretariat brought it back to the most human question of all: why does this matter to you?

Are you doing this so Muslim girls have more access to education? So LGBT youth have access to safe spaces? So the child in your community who can't afford school someday can?

Because if it matters to you personally, if you can see the face of the person you're building for, that's what makes the work real. That's what makes it last.

To our 120 fellows across ASEAN and South Korea: we hope you leave Session 5 not just with frameworks and policy questions, but with a clearer sense of your own fight.

That's what this fellowship is for. 🌏

AI isn't the destination. It's the road. And Southeast Asia is still figuring out who gets to drive. 🌏⚑

Session 5 of the AI for Asia Fellowship goes beyond the hype, into the hard questions. What does it actually take to build AI ecosystems that are equitable and intelligent across 11 nations, 700 million people, and vastly different levels of access and readiness? Who's at the table when these decisions are made? And what happens when the answer is: not enough of the right people?

This Saturday, we're sitting down with someone who's been navigating exactly that.

Meet Carlo Fernando, Learning Innovation and Information Specialist at the SEAMEO Secretariat working across Southeast Asia to drive how education systems adapt, innovate, and lead in a world being reshaped by AI. Carlo has sat at the regional table, he knows where the gaps are, and he's bringing that lens directly to our fellows.

After the fireside, we're not just talking about it. our 120 young leaders will step into the room as policymakers themselves, identifying real governance gaps and pitching real fixes. Because the next generation of AI leadership in this region isn't a someday thing. It starts now. 🎯

"How should we use AI responsibly in higher education? From UNESCO's perspective, AI must remain human-centered." πŸ’¬

Last Saturday, Boyi Zhang, Programme Officer at UNESCO-ICHEI, opened Session 4 of the AI for Asia Fellowship by bringing us inside how one of the world's leading education bodies is actually thinking about AI: not as a replacement for human learning, but as a tool that must be shaped by human values.

From micro-credentials to smart classrooms, UNESCO ICHEI is actively building the frameworks and platforms that help institutions in Southeast Asia integrate AI without losing sight of what education is really for, developing people, not just optimizing outcomes.

120 young leaders from across ASEAN and South Korea sat with that question for an hour. The conversation didn't give easy answers. It gave better ones.

"As AI continues to transform our economies and societies, we need leaders who can bridge technology with human need, leaders who understand." πŸ’¬

Before the session even began, Andreas Tjendra, AI National Advisor and RMIT Industry Partner, set the tone for everything that followed in Session 4.

His message: the next generation of AI leaders won't just be the ones who understand the technology. They'll be the ones who understand the people the technology is supposed to serve. Innovation that creates opportunity only for a select few isn't progress, it's a new kind of exclusion.

That framing stayed in the room as Boyi Zhang walked us through how UNESCO ICHEI is trying to build AI capacity across higher education in Southeast Asia, not for the few institutions that are already ahead, but for the ones that need support the most.

This is what it looks like to think about AI at the policy level. And these are the conversations we're bringing to 120 young leaders across the region.
