In the fourth instalment of our “Inside ACMI” series, Avia Solutions Group Founder & Chairman, Gediminas Ziemelis, explains how aircraft leasing companies have evolved. ✈️

Tier 1 airlines now demand the latest technology with leading ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) operators now ordering aircraft directly from manufacturers.

Ziemelis also discusses how counter-cyclical demand for aircraft and MRO services have been proven in the aftermath of the pandemic, with the appetite for capacity increasing prior to the conflict in Iran.

Picture the scene. You're at the gate and looking forward to your well-deserved vacation. But the boarding of the aircraft hasn't started yet.

Out on the tarmac, a ground crew is finishing one of the most precise jobs in aviation - fueling the plane.

For a commercial aircraft, the process takes anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the plane's size, the fueling equipment available, and the ground conditions. A smaller private plane can be fueled in as little as 10 minutes. In contrast, a wide-body jet on a long-haul route needs significantly more time and a lot more fuel.

The process isn't as simple as filling a tank. Every step follows strict protocols from the moment the fuel truck arrives to the final safety check before the nozzle disconnects. Ground crews are specifically trained for this, and quality control measures are in place to prevent contamination and ensure the process meets aviation standards before a single drop of fuel is dispensed.

Several factors affect how long it takes:

𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲: Larger planes carry more fuel and require more time to fill.

𝗙𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Well-maintained, high-capacity systems operate faster.

𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿: Strong winds or extreme temperatures can slow the process or require additional precautions.

𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Precise timing between the crew, the pilot, and operations keeps everything on schedule.

By the time your boarding gate opens, the ground crew has already completed their job precisely and completely, often out of sight.

This is just one of the many intricacies of aviation where a hundred things happen before you even take your seat.

World-class teams are built through continuous learning.

This belief is central to everything we do at ASG Global Services Philippines, and it was clearly demonstrated during our Power BI training session on June 24. ✈️

Our Manila Center team participated in a session led by our Learning and Development Specialist, Joshua Mon De Belen, focused on introducing the fundamentals of data analytics and building capability around what is often called the “new gold” of the 21st century, data.

In an environment that supports aviation services across multiple subsidiaries and global markets, the ability to understand, interpret, and act on data is no longer optional. It is foundational.

This session was designed not just to teach a tool, but to build a mindset. It encouraged teams to see data not simply as numbers, but as a strategic asset that enables better decision-making, improves operational efficiency, and drives continuous improvement.

Reflecting on the session, Josh shared:

"I've facilitated a lot of sessions. The ones that stick are never really about the subject matter. They're about whether a team is ready to grow and whether the organization behind them is serious about making it happen. Both were evident during the training. The hunger in that room was real. And the fact that the center continues to invest in sessions like this for every person on the team tells you everything about the kind of organization this is becoming." 💡

This is what a center of excellence looks like in motion. Growing teams, expanding capabilities, and building the confidence to leverage data as a driver of impact.

MNL. You know the code; you've seen it on your boarding pass every time you fly out of NAIA.

But have you ever booked a flight to Siargao and wondered: why 𝗜𝗔𝗢? Not SRG. Not SIA. Nothing that obviously spells Siargao.

Here's what's actually going on.

Every airport in the world carries a unique three-letter code assigned by the International Air Transport Association, better known as IATA. These codes exist so airlines, ground crews, and systems worldwide can identify airports instantly, without confusion, across every language and time zone.

The logic behind the codes varies widely:

▪️Some are straightforward - 𝗠𝗡𝗟for Manila, 𝗖𝗘𝗕 for Cebu, 𝗗𝗩𝗢 for Davao

▪️Some reflect history - 𝗢𝗥𝗗 in Chicago comes from Orchard Field, the airport's original name before it was renamed O'Hare

▪️Some are creative workarounds - 𝗟𝗔𝗫 in Los Angeles started as "LA" with the "X" added as a distinct identifier

▪️And some can make you look twice - 𝗦𝗜𝗡 belongs to Singapore's Changi Airport, consistently ranked the world's best

Officially named Sayak Airport and located in Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte, 𝗜𝗔𝗢 is the code for one of the Philippines' most beloved islands. This surf paradise is connected to the global aviation network by three letters most travelers type without a second thought.

Next time you check in, look at that airport code. Behind every three letters is a story and a system that keeps the world connected.

Your flight attendant has been on their feet for hours. On long-haul journeys, however, they also get to sleep somewhere on that same plane.

Airlines roster extra crew for long-haul flights, rotating them through scheduled rest breaks in compartments most passengers never knew even existed.

Hidden behind unmarked doors, often above or below the main cabin, these crew rest areas are a quiet yet essential part of how aviation manages the demanding nature of extended flights.

Simply put, flight attendants don't rest on benches, nor do pilots sleep in the cockpit. Modern wide-body aircraft are specifically designed with dedicated crew bunks for this purpose.

These spaces are modest, typically a narrow bunk, a seatbelt, a reading light, and a privacy curtain.

While newer aircraft offer wider and longer bunks than earlier generations, the fundamental principle remains - crew members rest on scheduled breaks to ensure someone is always present and sharp in the cabin.

This isn't just for comfort, it's a regulatory requirement. Aviation regulations mandate that flight attendants can only work a certain number of hours before needing mandatory rest. These hidden rooms are the industry's practical solution to that rule, acknowledging that a 15-hour flight demands as much from its crew as it does from its passengers.

So, the next time you board a long-haul flight, that unmarked door is no longer a mystery.

One hundred twenty-eight years ago, the Philippines embarked on its own path.

What followed was not merely a nation finding its footing, but generations of professionals learning to meet the world's highest standards on its most demanding stages, particularly in aviation.

Today, that history is evident in operations centers, flight support desks, and logistics teams across the globe. Their contributions are not always loudly proclaimed, but they are consistently reliable and well-executed.

At the Manila Center, we are proud to be part of that story.

Happy Independence Day! 🇵🇭✈️
