If you are an active Master Mariner and now considering a marine superintendency job in the future, this is for you.

You don’t have to be a graduate from the country’s biggest maritime educational institutions to become one. I came from a maritime school that is not even in the top 10. And yet, I made it.

You do not have to know everything about the role to start because the truth is, I and many marine superintendents I know also didn’t. In silence, I observed, learned along the process, became curious about how things are done in the office, so I made it.

You do not have to have so much savings in the bank. Many won’t believe it but I didn’t have, too. I just didn’t keep with the Joneses, so I made it.

You will not get paid as much as you are paid onboard. Highly likely, not even half of that salary you’re enjoying now. I managed my finances, so I made it.

You will be recognized in the office as “Captain”, but know that you no longer are. Someone else is already taking the conn. Office work is not yet a mastery of yours. I was humble enough to accept this while gaining the needed mastery, so I made it.

Becoming a is not for everybody because of varying preferences and circumstances. A lot of things need to be considered. But once you have discovered your “WHY”, the directions to this exciting yet challenging journey will start to manifest. Your “WHY”, if it’s really big enough, will dissuade the thought of going back at sea; it will fuel you to exert the efforts worthy of recognition to get you to the next step of corporate ladder - the sweetest time to “redeem” everything you’ve given up for this role.

My love for my family is my “WHY. That’s why I made it!

• Officer follows plan & communicates changes
• Ensures crew stays clear of snap-back zones

How do you rate your familiarity with Ballast Water Management Convention and BWMS Code?

SIRE 2.0 Question: 2.6.1. Were the Master, deck officers and engineer officers familiar with the vessel's Ballast Water Management Plan and were records available to demonstrate that ballast handling had been conducted in accordance with the plan?

Why it matters?
👉 To ensure that ballast is always safely handled in accordance with the Ballast Water Management Convention and BWMS Code.
