Immigration warns public anew vs. fixers
MANILA, Philippines—The Bureau of Immigration (BI) called on the public not to patronize the services of ‘fixers’ who offer assistance for a fee.
BI Commissioner Jaime Morente reminded the public not to fall for offers of fixers who “sweet talk their victims and promise immediate results”. Said reminder came Wednesday, following the arrest of an alleged fixer in Mandaluyong on Tuesday.
According to reports, operatives from the Philippine National Police Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (PNP IMEG) took custody of a certain Brigeda Quijano, after she allegedly received P150,000 to facilitate the release of a German national.
Morente likewise reiterated to prospective Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) not to accept offers from so called ‘escorts’ who would facilitate their illegal departure from the country.
He shared that two female victims were intercepted Sunday afternoon at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 after presenting fake documents to be able to illegally work in Dubai. According to the victims, their documents were given at the NAIA by airport employees they met through Facebook.
Morente added that they are currently investigating airport personnel that may be involved in escorting illegal migrant workers, and have sanitized the immigration area at the airports to ensure that only authorized personnel may enter.
“Do not fall to the trap set by fixers, escorts, and facilitators,” said Morente. He also urged the public to report them immediately. “We have streamlined our procedures to make it easier for the transacting public. Employing fixers is unnecessary, an added cost, and most probably get you in trouble,” he warned.
