Bottling Heritage: How Piat’s Farmers Turned Sugarcane into Madovilla Basi 🥃🍾
If you ever find yourself driving through the rolling, sun-kissed hills of Piat in Cagayan, you will likely notice two things: the majestic Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat, and endless, shimmering fields of sugarcane.
But while the sugarcane traditionally went straight to big mill nearby to become everyday sugar, a brilliant group of farmer-agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) decided that their hard work deserved a bit more... spirit.
Enter the Mabuhay Agri-Crop Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MPC), an Agrarian Reform Beneficiary Organization (ARBO) that turned local sweet cane into a cultural icon known as Madovilla Basi.
From Fields to Bottles: The Sweet Spark.
For a long time, the agrarian reform beneficiaries of Mabuhay Agri-Crop MPC were locked in the standard cycle of farming: grow the sugarcane, harvest it, sell it raw, and repeat.
The turning point came when the cooperative realized they had an ancient Northern Luzon tradition literally growing right in their backyards. Basi—the legendary, deeply historical Ilocano and Cagayano sugarcane wine—was the perfect way to add value to their crops. Instead of just selling raw agriculture, they decided to bottle the heritage of Piat.
The cooperative didn't just want to make regular basi, though. They wanted something that stood out. Through sheer determination, local mastery, and vital support from government agencies like the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), they refined their production.
They officially birthed the brand name Madovilla, transforming a backyard ferment into a cleanly packaged, premium native wine.
The Secret Ingredient: A Healthy Twist!
What makes Madovilla Basi an absolute conversation starter at any gathering? The cooperative decided to step up the traditional recipe by introducing a unique blend: Sugarcane Wine infused with Sambong.
Sambong (Blumea balsamifera) is a well-known local medicinal herb used in the Philippines to help with kidney health and fluid balance. By marrying the sweet, earthy heat of fermented sugarcane juice with the herbal undertones of sambong, Mabuhay Agri-Crop MPC created a smooth, 17% alcohol-by-volume drink that lets you toast to good health—literally!
The Modern-Day Toast
Today, Mabuhay Agri-Crop MPC stands proud as a model ARBO. They've proven that when agrarian reform beneficiaries are given the right tools, training, and a bit of entrepreneurial imagination, they can transform a standard harvest into a high-value community treasure.
Madovilla Basi is no longer just a drink passed around in clay jars under a mango tree; it’s a commercially viable product showcased at trade fairs, representing the resourcefulness of Cagayan’s farming communities.
So, the next time you pay a visit to Piat, make sure to grab a bottle. Pour a glass, take a sip of that sweet, herbal warmth, and raise a glass to the hardworking farmers of Mabuhay Agri-Crop MPC who poured their hearts, history, and heritage into every single drop! Mabuhay!
