Right now, it's not just our own government that concerns us. It's also the possibility of other countries allegedly trying to influence or even gain control over the Philippines. That is what makes this situation so alarming.
As we see in this video, it's heartbreaking because the very people we expect to stand up for us and defend our country. Those holding the highest positions in the government appear, to many people, to be taking a different side. What's even more disappointing is that some officials seem unaware of the current issues affecting our nation, even though staying informed is part of their responsibility as public servants.
We all know that the opinions and concerns of the Filipino people should be considered before making major national decisions. Sadly, many of us only learned about this through the news. It seemed to come out of nowhere, and by the time the public became aware of it, it had already been signed and was reportedly ready for implementation.
This data centre project has received many negative reviews in some countries where similar facilities have been established, particularly regarding their high consumption of electricity and water. That is why I believe it is important for us, as Filipinos, to stand up and protect our country.
As a young Filipino who opposes the implementation of this data centre project in New Clark City, I am deeply disappointed that the government appears to be focusing mainly on its potential economic benefits, such as job creation. While employment opportunities are important, we must also consider the possible environmental impact.
As the late Secretary Gina Lopez often emphasised, a significant portion of Filipinos rely on our environment and natural resources for their livelihood. Because of this, protecting the environment should be given the same importance as pursuing economic development. We need progress that is sustainable and beneficial not only for the present generation but also for future Filipinos.
