Productive meeting today with H.E. the Deputy Ambassador of Pakistan at the Embassy of Pakistan in Lisbon, Portugal. 🇵🇰🤝🇵🇹

We discussed my recent engagement with the Portugal Chamber of Commerce and Industry and reached a shared understanding on the importance of organizing a Pakistan Travel Show in Lisbon in the near future. This initiative will be instrumental in promoting Pakistan’s tourism, culture, and investment potential across Europe.

A key pillar of our discussion was the strategic power of language in global outreach:

· Portuguese is the 5th most spoken language in the world, serving as an official language in Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and Mozambique.
· Spanish is spoken in 20 countries and one territory across Europe, Africa, and the Americas—with Mexico, Colombia, Spain, Argentina, Peru, and a massive Spanish-speaking population in the U.S. leading the way.

Together, these two languages give us access to nearly 35% of the world’s population. We agreed on collaborating with local partners to promote Pakistan by inviting renowned vloggers, influencers, and celebrities from Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries to visit Pakistan.

This strategy can authentically showcase Pakistan’s beauty, hospitality, and opportunities to a truly global audience—delivering tangible benefits to our country’s tourism sector and economy.

I am deeply grateful to H.E. the Ambassador for his vision and support. Looking forward to working together on this important initiative.

Productive meeting today with the wonderful team at the Portugal Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Lisbon, Portugal.

Mr Nazim Ullah Baig, Director of Foreign Trade, Hunza Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry, met with Ms. Raquel Rodrigues, Head of the Department of Marketing & International Affairs, and her team.

Key outcomes discussed:

* Capacity building & training – Exploring joint programs for our business communities.

* Bilateral exchange – The Chamber was invited to visit Pakistan, and they graciously accepted. We also plan to bring a delegation from Pakistan and Gilgit-Baltistan to Lisbon to explore trade and investment opportunities.

* Tourism cooperation – Collaboration will be developed to promote tourism in Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Pakistan, and future participation in tourism events in Lisbon was discussed.

With over 200 years of history, the Portugal Chamber has an outstanding legacy in economic and human development. Nazim Ullah Baig was truly impressed by their work and vision. There is immense value in learning from their experience through knowledge exchange and training.

Looking forward to strengthening the bridge between Portugal and Pakistan for our business and tourism sectors.

Hunza Chamber of Small traders and small industry, warmly welcomes the arrival of the first commercial truck from Kyrgyzstan via Sost and Khunjerab Pass. This historic step marks the beginning of a new economic corridor for the region.

The activation of this route under the Quadrilateral Transit Traffic Agreement (QTTA) and the TIR system will accelerate trade activities, reduce transport costs, and provide Central Asian states with direct access to Pakistani ports.

President Mubarak Hussain and his entire cabinet worked together continuously to activate this route, contacted relevant authorities, and raised their voice to make Sost Border a regional trade hub. This development will boost business in Hunza and Gilgit-Baltistan, create new employment opportunities for youth, and help Pakistan emerge as a key regional trade hub.

The Chamber appeals to the Government of Pakistan to provide infrastructure facilities and policy support to fully benefit from this historic opportunity.

This initiative is not only a trade success but also a strong step towards regional development, prosperity, and mutual cooperation.

Chief Secretary and Government of Gilgit-Baltistan – Immediately Withdraw the Trade Quota System

The Hunza Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry has outright rejected the recent quota allocation mechanism, terming it non-transparent, unjust, and detrimental to cross-border trade. According to the Chamber, the quota being exhausted within just 12 minutes of the portal opening is clear evidence of the system’s complete failure and blatant injustice towards traders.

The Chamber maintains that the existing quota system has repeatedly proven to disregard experience, merit, and the services of long-standing importers who have sustained cross-border trade over the years. In this context, any form of quota system is harmful for the region, as it prioritises only speed while sidelining fairness and equal opportunity.

Therefore, the Hunza Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry strongly demands that the Chief Secretary of Gilgit-Baltistan and the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan immediately take notice of this matter and completely withdraw and abolish the current quota system. According to the Chamber, this system should be replaced with a transparent, merit‑based trade mechanism free from artificial shortages, so that the legitimate rights of traders in the border district of Hunza are secured and cross-border trade can achieve stability.

The Chamber has made it clear that if the Chief Secretary and the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan fail to pay urgent attention to these legitimate and fundamental demands and do not withdraw the quota system, the trading community will have no choice but to resort to strong, joint protest measures, including a complete strike. In such a case, all responsibility will rest with the relevant authorities.

The people of Hunza have continued their trade activities for a long time despite fear and hardships. They have a fundamental right to justice. The quota system must be abolished.

چیف سیکرٹری اور حکومت گلگت بلتستان تجارتی کوٹہ سسٹم کو فوری واپس لیا جائے ۔۔

ہنزہ چیمبر آف سمال ٹریڈرز اینڈ سمال انڈسٹری نے حالیہ کوٹہ الاٹمنٹ کے طریقۂ کار کو یکسر مسترد کرتے ہوئے اسے غیر شفاف، ناانصاف پر مبنی اور سرحدی تجارت کے لیے تباہ کن قرار دیا ہے۔ چیمبر کے مطابق پورٹل کھلنے کے محض 12 منٹ میں کوٹہ ختم ہو جانا اس نظام کی مکمل ناکامی اور تاجروں کے ساتھ صریح زیادتی کی واضح علامت ہے۔

چیمبر کا مؤقف ہے کہ موجودہ کوٹہ سسٹم نے بار بار ثابت کیا ہے کہ یہ تجربے، میرٹ اور طویل عرصے سے سرحدی تجارت کو برقرار رکھنے والے درآمد کنندگان کی خدمات کو نظر انداز کرتا ہے۔ ایسے میں کسی بھی قسم کا کوٹہ سسٹم اس خطے کے لیے نقصان دہ ہے، کیونکہ یہ محض رفتار کو ترجیح دیتا ہے جبکہ انصاف اور مساوی مواقع کو پس پشت ڈال دیتا ہے۔

لہٰذا ہنزہ چیمبر آف سمال ٹریڈرز اینڈ سمال انڈسٹری چیف سیکرٹری گلگت بلتستان اور حکومت گلگت بلتستان سے پرزور مطالبہ کرتی ہے کہ وہ فوری طور پر اس معاملے کا نوٹس لیں اور موجودہ کوٹہ سسٹم کو مکمل طور پر واپس لے کر ختم کر دیا جائے۔ چیمبر کے مطابق اس نظام کی جگہ ایک شفاف، میرٹ پر مبنی اور بغیر کسی مصنوعی قلت کے تجارتی نظام کو متعارف کرایا جانا چاہیے، تاکہ سرحدی ضلع ہنزہ کے تاجروں کو ان کا جائز حق مل سکے اور سرحدی تجارت کو استحکام حاصل ہو۔

چیمبر نے واضح کیا ہے کہ اگر چیف سیکرٹری اور حکومت گلگت بلتستان نے ان جائز اور بنیادی مطالبات پر فوری توجہ نہ دی اور کوٹہ سسٹم کو واپس نہ لیا، تو تاجر برادری کے پاس اس کے سوا کوئی چارہ نہیں رہے گا کہ وہ بھرپور اور مشترکہ احتجاجی اقدامات، بشمول مکمل ہڑتال، کا راستہ اختیار کرے۔ تمام تر ذمہ داری اس صورت میں متعلقہ حکام پر عائد ہوگی۔

ہنزہ کے عوام طویل عرصے سے خوف اور مشکلات کے باوجود اپنی تجارتی سرگرمیاں جاری رکھے ہوئے ہیں۔ انہیں انصاف کا بنیادی حق حاصل ہے۔ کوٹہ سسٹم کو ختم کروایا جائے۔

ہنزہ چیمبر آف سمال ٹریڈرز اینڈ سمال انڈسٹری نے چنار باغ، گلگت میں واقع خواتین مارکیٹ میں آگ لگنے کے المناک واقعہ پر گہرے رنج و افسوس کا اظہار کیا ہے۔ یہ مارکیٹ مقامی حکومت اور خواتین چیمبر آف کامرس گلگت ڈویژن کے زیر نگرانی چل رہی تھی، جہاں متعدد خواتین کاروباری افراد اپنے روزگار اور معاش سے وابستہ تھیں۔

آگ سے درجنوں دکانوں کو شدید نقصان پہنچا ہے، جس میں ہنڈکرافٹ، کپڑے، زیورات، خشک میوہ جات اور دیگر گھریلو مصنوعات شامل تھیں۔ لاکھوں روپے مالیت کا سامان جل کر راکھ ہو گیا ہے۔

چیمبر کا کہنا ہے کہ یہ واقعہ نہ صرف خواتین کاروباریوں کے لیے بڑا دھچکا ہے بلکہ علاقے کی چھوٹی صنعت اور خواتین کی معاشی خودمختاری کی کوششوں کو بھی شدید نقصان پہنچا ہے۔

چیمبر نے گلگت بلتستان حکومت اور ضلعی انتظامیہ سے مطالبہ کیا ہے کہ نقصان کا فوری جائزہ لیا جائے، متاثرہ خواتین تاجروں کو منصفانہ معاوضہ دیا جائے تاکہ وہ دوبارہ اپنا کاروبار شروع کر سکیں، اور آگ لگنے کی وجوہات کی شفاف تحقیقات کی جائیں۔ مزید برآں، مستقبل میں ایسے واقعات سے بچاؤ کے لیے حفاظتی انتظامات کو یقینی بنایا جائے۔

چیمبر نے وفاقی اور صوبائی حکومتوں سے بھی اپیل کی ہے کہ وہ گلگت بلتستان میں خواتین کی چھوٹی صنعتوں اور کاروباروں کو درپیش چیلنجز کو سنجیدگی سے لیں اور اس نقصان کا ازالہ کریں۔
