Nine questions worth asking any LMS vendor before you sign. Ask us them too. Our answers are below the list.

1. If we leave, what format does our content come out in? Get it in writing.

2. Are SCORM and xAPI included on the entry plan, or is portability an upgrade?

3. Where is our data physically stored? Which country?

4. What is the total cost at 300 learners, not at 40?

5. Which features are missing from the plan you have quoted us?

6. Can we run it on our own domain with our branding, on this plan?

7. What happens when we exceed our user limit? Refused, or invoiced?

8. What are your support hours in our time zone?

9. Can we upload the courses we already own, or only use yours?

Question one matters most and gets asked least. If your courses cannot leave, every negotiation for the next decade happens with whoever is holding your library. That is true of us as much as anyone.

"How long should a compliance module be?"

Asked twice this week, so here is the honest answer. Shorter than the one you have.

A rough guide from nine years of building these.

Under 10 minutes. One policy point, one behaviour. Annual refreshers belong here and almost never live here.

15 to 20 minutes. One topic with scenarios. This is where most corporate compliance training should sit.

40 minutes. A full topic with branching decisions and remediation. Worth it when the cost of getting it wrong is high.

Over an hour. Almost never one course. It is three courses nobody separated.

The instinct is to put everything in one module because it feels efficient to build. It is efficient to build. It is not efficient to finish.

Sort your completion data by module length some time. Most people find the pattern is already sitting there.
