Traits and Behaviour
Pigeons vs Humans
Did you know ?
Just like humans, pigeons inherit a mix of traits from both parents (genetics), but how those traits appear can vary in each offspring:
* **Physical traits** (size, feather color, eye color, beak shape, feather quality, body structure) can be different in each squab, even from the same pair. For example, one youngster may have strong wing muscles, while the other is lighter built.
* **Performance traits** (orientation ability, stamina, speed, homing instinct) also vary. That’s why pigeon fanciers often say: *“Good breeders don’t always breed good racers every time.”* Out of 4–5 babies from the same pair, maybe one turns out to be outstanding, while the others are average.
* **Behavior & temperament** (calm, nervous, aggressive, tame, stubborn, etc.) can differ just like in humans. Some youngsters are very tame and friendly, while their siblings may be wild or aggressive in the loft.
The main difference from humans is that pigeons don’t have the same complexity of *personality*, but they **do show individual behavior differences**. For example:
* One may prefer to fly higher or longer.
* Another may be more “basket friendly” (calm in the race basket).
* One might be bold and eat first, while its sibling is shy.
👉 This is why **pigeon breeding is unpredictable** — fanciers test youngsters (by training and racing) to find out which one has the best qualities, even if all are from the same parents.
