What is Marine conservation?
It is the protection and preservation of the ecosystem in oceans and seas through planned management in order to prevent the over-exploitation of these marine resources
Why is Marine conversation necessary for our coast?
With a coastline of 990 km along the Arabian sea, Pakistan is predominantly an arid/semi-arid region, increasing levels in the coastal regions and degradation of marine resources are emerging as environmental threats to the ecosystem. These ecosystems have a significant economic value, as people, livestock, and wildlife are dependent on them for their livelihood and survival. The economic losses to future generations from degradation of the coastal environment and natural systems will be immeasurable if we don't take precautions. There has been ample pollution from ship ship-breaking industry in Gadani via oil spills and waste management, and an accession procedure led by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs is near completion. The objective is to minimize the ecological footprint leading towards the preservation of coral life, mangroves, and wildlife.
What is Marine pollution?
Marine pollution is a combination of both chemical and trash, 80% of the pollution is caused by humans, some of the major causes are:
1) Nonpoint source pollution – pollution created by cars, boats, farms, construction etc
2) Intentional discharge – dumping waste, oil into the sea
3) Oil spills
4) Littering
5) Ocean mining
Being part of the maritime industry, at Scancom we are keen on creating a socially responsible community. We are in the process of collaborating with Marine Conservation, an innovative entity working towards marine conservation in Pakistan.
