Value Stream Mapping = one of the key tools of lean thinking.

Indentifying:

➡️ process waste
➡️ disconnects
➡️ opportunities for improvement.

1️⃣ First step = analyzing the the status quo. "Gemba" style to understand the current state and discuss the problems, waste, and opportunities found.

2️⃣ Next, draw the future state = focus on delivering more value to the customer by eliminating process waste, creating connections between stages and areas involved, and seeking continuous flow.

An important point in VSM is always asking, "What problem are we trying to solve?" This directs us to a specific focus where we can achieve our goals with less effort.

Fast food & ? Yes, in terms of assembly lines. Can learn from fast food as the extreme form of make to order/just in time manufacturing ( )? The key to maximize , identify + remove :

1. McDonald's
of products and processes
- production + usage of space
- Production process approach: different work cells combining to make the finished product
- Just-in-Time: make what's needed

2. In-N-Out Burger
- drive through line: at peak times order takers walk out to the and take orders
- the gril: thin patties, six to a pound, and doubles or triples them up for customers who want a bigger burger
- time to fill drinks: constraint removed by giving customers their own cups and letting them fill their Own drinks
- : In-N-Out is the burger specialist

3. Pal's Sudden Service
- 4x than the second-fastest quick-serve in the US
- average of 18 sec at the drive-up window & 12 sec at the handout window to receive an order

Conventional batch production vs. one-piece flow production: basics for beginners....using the burger example. Low inventory, short lead times, fast error detection...yes, one-piece flow is not the magic "fits it all" solution. Like all the experts in this network mentioned many times, it depends!
