The idea for a railway network in the region began in 1847, with hopes of making Karachi a major seaport. In 1858, Sir Henry Edward Frere, the Commissioner of Sindh, asked Lord Dalhousie for permission to survey a railway line from Karachi to Kotri and to develop the Karachi Seaport. After receiving approval, he initiated work on the railway line linking Karachi’s port to the town of Kotri.
On May 13, 1861, this vision became a reality when the first railway line, stretching 169 kilometers (105 miles) between Karachi and Kotri, was opened to the public. Built by the Scinde Railway Company, this railway line not only facilitated trade and transportation but also established a critical foundation for Pakistan’s railway network.
