What Is Christmas? And the Islamic Perspective

🎄 Christmas Is Celebrated by Millions — But What Does It Mean, and How Does Islam View It?

Christmas is a religious festival celebrated by Christians on 25th December.
It is observed as the birth of Jesus Christ (peace be upon him), whom Christians believe to be the son of God. The day is marked with church services, special prayers, decorations, and religious rituals.
Islamic Understanding
Islam holds Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام in very high honor.

The Qur’an clearly mentions him as one of the greatest prophets of Allah, born miraculously to Maryam (peace be upon her), but not divine.

Islamic Ruling
Christmas is a religious festival, not a cultural event.

Islam teaches Muslims to respect all prophets but not to participate in religious celebrations of other faiths.

Participating in religious rituals or celebrations that contradict Islamic beliefs is not permissible, because it involves endorsing beliefs Islam does not accept.

Key Reason:
Islam protects clarity of belief (Aqeedah).
Respect does not mean religious participation.

Understanding these boundaries helps Muslims live peacefully while staying true to their faith.

Not every “future deal” is a valid deal.
Islam draws a firm line between vision and illusion in business.

One of the foundational rules of Islamic commercial law is the prohibition of Bay‘ al-Ma‘dūm—the sale of something that does not yet exist. A transaction built on non-existence is not just risky; it is invalid. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ clearly forbade such sales, protecting markets from uncertainty and deception.

History gives us a powerful example. Before Islam, people would sell the unborn offspring of a pregnant animal—and even the offspring of that unborn. This extreme uncertainty turned trade into speculation. Islam abolished it and replaced it with a principle that still guides ethical commerce today: you can only sell what truly exists and is owned.

This is why Islamic law does not allow the sale of:

* A book before it is printed
* Clothing before it is manufactured
* Products before they are produced
All of these fall under selling the nonexistent. However, Islam remains practical and balanced: a promise to sell in the future is allowed, but the sale itself must wait until the item exists**.

🌱 Islam does not reject planning or innovation.
It rejects uncertainty (gharar) that shifts risk unfairly onto one party.

In an era of pre-launch sales, speculative investments, and hype-driven markets, Islamic ethics remind us of a timeless truth:
A valid transaction is built on reality, not promises.

What if a small ‘extra’ in a transaction could turn a halal deal into riba?”

Most Muslims today avoid interest from banks, but many unknowingly fall into another form of riba — through everyday exchanges, even while buying gold, trading currency, or swapping goods.
This is why our scholars emphasized understanding two major types: Riba al-Faḍl and Riba al-Nasī’ah — terms that sound complex, but their meanings are incredibly practical, and deeply rooted in the Sunnah.

Let’s break them down clearly and simply:

1. What Is Riba al-Faḍl (Excess Riba)?

Riba al-Faḍl happens when two items of the same category are exchanged with an unequal amount.

👉 Real Example:

You trade 1kg of wheat for 1.2kg of wheat.
Even if it’s hand-to-hand with no delay — that extra 0.2kg is riba.

👉 Another Example:

Selling 10 grams of gold for 11 grams of gold on the spot.
Halal? ❌ No.
Because both are the same ribawi item, and the extra amount is prohibited.

Why Is It Forbidden?

The Prophet ﷺ said:

> “Gold for gold, silver for silver… equal for equal, hand to hand. Whoever adds or asks for more has engaged in riba.”
(Sahih Muslim)

The purpose?
To block injustice and exploitation — even if it seems small.

2. What Is Riba al-Nasī’ah (Delay Riba)?

Riba al-Nasī’ah is the extra amount charged because payment is postponed.
It is the classic “interest” model: more money in return for more time.

👉 Real Example:

You lend someone Rs 1,000 and tell them:
“Return Rs 1,100 after 12 months.”
That extra Rs 100 is riba al-nasī’ah — an increase purely for delay.

👉 Another Example

A creditor says:
“If you can’t pay this month, next month your amount becomes 10% more.”
This increase due to postponement = riba al-nasī’ah.

Why This Matters Today

In today’s world of:
gold trading apps,
currency exchanges,
instant online swaps,
commodity trades,

…these rules are more relevant than ever.

Understanding this is not “fiqh detail” — it’s financial safety.

Final Thought

Riba is not prohibited to make life difficult.
It’s prohibited because Allah wants to protect societies from inequality and financial injustice.

Knowledge in these matters is not just for scholars — it’s for every Muslim who buys, sells, invests, or trades.

“When the doors of wealth close on the living, injustice is born — but when Allah’s law of inheritance opens, hearts finally breathe in fairness.”

“We prepare for this world like we will live forever… yet our true test begins the day we leave everything behind.”

There comes a moment in every family when silence fills the house — a loved one has returned to Allah. At that moment, emotions rise, hearts shake, and the real character of people begins to show. Wealth that once meant nothing to the deceased suddenly becomes the source of unity… or division. And here, the beauty of Islam shines brighter than ever.

Islam does not leave inheritance to personal whims or emotions. It is a divine system — a system that protects the weak, safeguards the rights of women, and prevents the strong from swallowing what is not theirs.
Allah knew that human hearts can be overtaken by greed, so He drew a perfect map of justice in Surah An-Nisā’, where each heir is given what is rightfully and ethically theirs.

Why Mirath Matters Emotionally and Spiritually

Because inheritance is not about money — it is about trust, love, justice, and leaving behind a legacy without breaking hearts.
It is about fulfilling the final right of the deceased, ensuring that no daughter feels forgotten, no mother feels abandoned, and no brother feels cheated. Mirath teaches us that true wealth is not what we keep, but what we distribute fairly.

A Lesson from the Prophet ﷺ

Once, a man came to the Prophet ﷺ wanting to give all his wealth to one child and leave the others with nothing. The Prophet ﷺ firmly corrected him and said:

“Do you want them to be equal in their kindness to you?”
He replied, “Yes.”
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Then do not be unfair in giving gifts.”

If unfairness is not allowed even in life, how can it ever be allowed after death?

The Prophet ﷺ always stood for justice, even in moments when emotions were high. His life teaches us that family harmony begins when wealth is shared with integrity.

Mirath Protects the Heart from Greed

Many families break apart after inheritance — siblings stop speaking, parents are hurt, and relationships fall apart. Islam gave Mirath to protect families from destruction.
It is not just law — it is love expressed through justice.

A Gentle Reminder

One day, our wealth will no longer belong to us.
But the way it is distributed will testify about who we were — fair or unfair, generous or greedy, just or unjust.

Let us choose what will bring us peace in the grave and harmony in our families.

I am delighted to share that I recently delivered a specialized training session on Shariah Compliant HR Governance, aimed at helping professionals build workplaces rooted in Islamic ethics, transparency, and human dignity.

The session provided a deep exploration of how Islamic principles can be practically integrated into modern human resources management, covering key areas such as:

· Core Islamic values of justice (‘Adl), fairness (Ihsan), and accountability (Amanah) in HR
· Designing recruitment, performance appraisal, and compensation systems in line with Shariah
· Ethical decision-making frameworks for people managers
· Developing HR policies based on Qur’an and Sunnah principles
· Addressing real-life HR challenges with Islamic solutions
· Fostering a culture of trust, respect, and employee well-being

It was an inspiring opportunity to engage with others and to discuss how Islamic governance can create more meaningful and productive work environments.

I am truly grateful for the enthusiastic participation and thoughtful contributions from all attendees. I look forward to further sessions that continue to promote ethical and value-driven organizational practices in light of Shariah.
