A human child is born with many more bones (approximately 270) at the time of birth. However, these soft bones are flexible and keep growing in length & diameter and fuse (solidify at the main joints) between ages of 17 and 21. This process is called 'Ossification of bones in Anatomy'. Hence, eventually, a grown up (male or female) has 206 individual pieces of bones, including small pieces in the palm (carpals) & ankle (tarsals). The largest and thickest (load-bearing) of all of them is the thigh bone called as Femur which bears weight of the entire upper body.
