ISO 12944 - Corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems.

Offshore and related structures require specific attention in order to be able to withstand the severe corrosion stresses to which they are exposed during their service life and to minimize the risk along with the relevant laboratory performance tests to assess their likely durability.

ISO 12944 part 9 places emphasis on high- durability paint systems, with the aim of minimizing maintenance and hence reducing safety considerations and environmental impact.

By far the most significant and important method used for the thorough cleaning of mill-scaled and rusted surfaces is abrasive blast cleaning. This method involves mechanical cleaning by the continuous impact of abrasive particles at high velocities on to the steel surface either in a jet stream of compressed air or by centrifugal impellers. The latter method requires large stationary equipment fitted with radial bladed wheels onto which the abrasive is fed.
As the wheels revolve at high speed, the abrasive is thrown onto the steel surface, the force of impact being determined by the size of the wheels and their radial velocity.
Modern facilities of this type use several wheels, typically 4 to 8, configured to treat all the surfaces of the steel being cleaned. The abrasives are recycled with separator screens to remove fine particles. This process can be 100% efficient in the removal of mill scale and rust.
The standard grades of cleanliness for abrasive blast cleaning in accordance with BS EN ISO 8501-1 are:
Sa 1 – Light blast cleaning
Sa 2 – Thorough blast cleaning
Sa 2½ – Very thorough blast cleaning
Sa 3 – Blast cleaning to visually clean steel

Defined at the Process Flow Diagram (PFD) level, a Corrosion Loop also known as Corrosion Circuit is typically shown in a document as part of a corrosion materials diagram (CMD) or as part of a damage mechanisms review (DMR) diagram.
The loop represents the common process, corrosion environment, and materials of construction, and includes all equipment within that loop susceptible to the same corrosion/damage mechanisms and at approximately the same rates of deterioration.
Well defined corrosion loops / circuit is a useful tool for providing an integrity management team with a simplified processes of grouping equipment and piping for efficient method of developing barriers and mitigations to ensure safe operations in accordance with the design intent.

Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC).
API RP 941, Steels for Hydrogen Service at Elevated Temperatures and Pressures in Petroleum Refineries and Petrochemical Plants, is a recommended practice developed and published by the American Petroleum Institute (API). This RP is intended to help owner-operators identify and manage equipment potentially subject to high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) by putting into place practical operating limits for carbon and low alloy steels in hydrogen service at elevated temperatures and pressures.
