CEOs forget Employee Engagement, its time for Employee Empowerment!
For close to a century, we've created motivation in organisations through intrinsic job factors, compensation and benefits, employer branding and cultural appeal. It has worked well but only when supported by a robust performance management system that can measure performance and can reward it and thus create common value. Organisations still struggled with retention, productivity and teamwork. So organisations adopted employee engagement practices, moving from a transactional to an emotional space. At the same time we were fortunate to be introduced to the concept of EQ and we embraced it as an important component of our organisational life.

Fast forward 2020. It seems that as we transform our businesses, we need more than motivation and engagement to keep our working life moving at the same pace as the transformation in the lives of our customers. That's the new challenge to the post-2020 Leadership. In a world that leaves us feeling disempowered, the great work laid out for CEOs and HR Leaders is Employee Empowerment, the new critical factor that energises organisations for innovation and growth.

A new kind of brand



It’s interesting to note that some brands being advertised in Pakistan are using a new strategy of ‘Introjects’ to connect emotionally with their consumers. saying ‘khoobsoorti say kia sharmana”, building on a rejection of ‘loag kia kahain gay’, “Jab koi rokay”. This communication from a brand, on the surface is saying ‘I care’ but more is happening at the emotional level. The brands are not making a functionally differentiated statement, neither are they making a promise to appeal to the aspirations of the consumer. Been there, done that! The new and very powerful communication strategy being practiced is to connect with the consumers in their journey to self-actualise, be spontaneous, drown the voices that hold us back from growth and to help us individuate. Of course the brands are not making any of these claims but they are attacking the introjects that create self-limiting thoughts, make us self-critical or even rejecting! Done correctly this is a very powerful way to be part of the consumer journey. 😊

Workshop on ‘Using Social Media as a Strategic Tool of Communication’

KARACHI: With Pakistan's Social Media landscape fast evolving and growing, a day-long workshop on Using Social Media as a Strategic Tool of Communication was conducted by Beena Sarwar, in collaboration with Milestone Lead Management Consulting, on April 25 2016, at the Pakistan Society of Training and Development (PSTD) in Karachi.
The workshop take-aways include learning about new social media platforms, taking different approaches to using social media, integrating multiple media platforms to meet communication objectives, do’s and don’ts of using social media and an interesting ‘drip irrigation’ analogy highlighting the importance of consistent and continuous input to a social media campaign over a long period of time for building retention and recall of the communication message. The methodology included instructor-led learning, group discussions and short cases.
Participants, representing a diverse group from the media, utility, education, non-profit and corporate sectors, found the workshop to be interactive and informative and recommended more industry-specific and structured programs on the subject.
This day-long session demonstrated the increasing complexity of managing the total media mix in today’s environment, integrating above-the-line and social media platforms and highlighted the need for building organizational capacity in this important domain of media and communications management.
