5 Children Killed, 13 Injured as Mortar Shell Explodes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

ISLAMABAD – August 2, 2025:
A tragic incident unfolded in Pakistan’s northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday morning when a mortar shell blast claimed the lives of five innocent children and left 13 others injured, according to local police officials.

The explosion occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the Lakki Marwat district, where a group of children were playing in a hilly area. During their play, they reportedly discovered an old, unexploded mortar shell. As they unknowingly tampered with it, the explosive device detonated, causing a devastating blast that resulted in multiple casualties.

Emergency teams quickly responded to the scene and transported the injured children to the nearest medical facility for urgent treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that several of the wounded remain in critical condition.

Law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation to determine how the explosive device ended up in the area. Authorities are also working to enhance safety measures in regions previously affected by conflict to prevent similar tragedies.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the ongoing risks posed by remnants of war in conflict-hit zones, especially for vulnerable children who are unaware of the dangers these objects carry.

Gaza Crisis: Over 1,300 Killed While Waiting for Food Aid – UN

The United Nations reports that since late May, over 1,300 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza while trying to get food aid. Most of the deaths — 859 near aid centers and 514 along convoy routes — are blamed on Israeli forces.

Just last Friday, 11 more people died, including two near an aid site, as confirmed by Gaza’s Civil Defence. The situation at distribution points remains chaotic, with daily risks of violence.

Gaza has faced severe shortages of food, fuel, and medicine for nearly 22 months. Although Israel allowed limited aid in May, the UN says the current flow is far below what’s needed — only 200 aid trucks entered Gaza on Friday, while 500 per day are required.

Business Leaders Slam Soaring Electricity Rates, Warn of Industrial Collapse

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s business community has raised serious concerns over the sudden rollback of the Rs7.41/unit electricity relief and the two-year shutdown of the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project, warning it may trigger de-industrialisation.

During a NEPRA hearing, industrialists criticized the government for failing to implement the full tariff relief announced by the PM in March. Power rates have now surged to Rs34–35/unit, up from Rs29, despite earlier commitments.

Amir Shaikh, a Lahore-based businessman, said the promised reductions tied to petroleum and gas levies have not been delivered. Business leaders say these rising costs could force factory closures and reverse investment gains.

Experts highlighted that solar adoption is easing grid pressure, but no progress has been made on renegotiating IPP contracts for cheaper electricity. Concerns were also raised over the government’s silence on removing the 1.5% electricity duty.

The CPPA confirmed the Neelum-Jhelum plant will remain offline due to technical issues, but noted a minor fuel cost adjustment of 15 paisa/unit in August bills.

WASHINGTON, July 30 – Private sector jobs in the U.S. increased more than expected in July, according to the ADP National Employment Report released on Wednesday. Despite signs of an overall slowdown in the labor market, the report showed that 104,000 new jobs were added last month.

This rise follows a revised drop of 23,000 jobs in June. Economists surveyed by Reuters had predicted a gain of about 75,000 jobs, based on earlier estimates that June saw a decline of 33,000 positions.

The ADP report, created in collaboration with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, comes just days before the official July employment figures from the U.S. Labor Department. However, it’s important to note that ADP’s report does not directly align with the government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, and the two often show different trends.
