Govt Launches Fixed Tax Scheme for Small Shopkeepers with Turnover Up to Rs 200 Million
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani announced a new fixed tax scheme for small shopkeepers at a news conference.
The scheme was prepared in consultation with traders and the Traders Association.
It applies to shopkeepers with annual turnover of Rs 200 million or less. Participation is optional, and shopkeepers can remain in the current tax system if they choose.
Shopkeepers in the scheme will receive a special identification plate from FBR displaying the shop name, NTN, and tax-related information.
FBR inspectors will verify details via the QR code on the plate. No inspector can enter a shop without scanning the QR code.
Participants will be exempted from general audit. Before any special audit, trade organizations will be consulted and a regular committee will be established for audit matters.
The government estimates 3-4 million small shopkeepers in the country, and bringing them into the tax net is described as an important milestone.
The scheme is implemented with the support of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and finalized with cooperation from FBR officials and the business community. Its success will be pursued in collaboration with the business community.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the government aims to expand the tax system by reducing tax rates rather than increasing them, to lower the burden on taxpayers.
He stated that despite last year’s floods and the tense situation in the Middle East, the country’s economy remained stable and challenges were managed with domestic resources without external assistance.
He added that establishing a fair and effective tax system in the country is the need of the hour.
