The war in Sudan is spiraling out of control, with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group seizing control of the city of El Fasher in Darfur after a 500-day siege. This has led to widespread violence, mass killings, rapes, and ethnically targeted violence, forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in:
- Over 40,000 people killed, according to UN figures, although aid groups estimate the true death toll could be much higher
- 14 million people displaced
- Famine and disease outbreaks in two regions of war-torn Sudan
- Reports of atrocities, including summary executions, mass killings, and rapes
The international community is calling for an immediate ceasefire, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warning of a humanitarian crisis.
