3rd May. Constitution Day (called ‘Święto Konstytucji 3 Maja’).
A national, public holiday in Poland.

This patriotic holiday commemorates the Polish Constitution which after many years of debate, discussions and negotiations in the Sejm (Polish Parliament) resulted in a national settlement signed on 3rd May 1791. It was the first constitution in Europe and the second in the world (after The American Declaration of Independence of 4 July 1776). The work of the Sejm and the Constitution itself were vital for Polish independence and were heroic actions in the war against the Russian occupation of Poland during those years.

The Constitution changed the political system in Poland. It gave a new and modern way of ruling the country as we know it today with a separation of the functions of law making and the application of the law and the judging of citizens of the country. Such a division created a modern and democratic country, the first of its kind in Europe. Amongst many changes the peasants were promised a certain amount of freedom and the influence of the nobles was limited. The political system changed the Polish ruling system from a Parliamentary Monarchy to Constitutional Monarchy. New and very modern reforms were implemented and Poland finally had a chance to strengthen her independence and become one of the important and modern nations in Europe.

Nowadays it is celebrated with military parades, historical presentations, concerts and family picnics.

2nd May. Polish National Flag Day (called 'Dzień Flagi Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej').

Polish holiday was introduced by Parliamentary Act issued on 20 February in 2004. The holiday is celebrated on the day between two national holidays: 1st May (called Labour Day) and 3rd May (called Constitution Day).

The choice of 2nd May is also significant. One of the reasons is the fact that in the times of the Polish People's Republic, on this day, state flags were removed after 1st May, so that they would not be visible on the day of the 3rd May Constitution abolished by the communist authorities.

Where do the Polish national colors come from and when did the white and red flag actually come from?

Historically, Polish national colors are derived from the colors of the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Poland and the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. According to the explanation of the symbolism of the Polish flag, the white comes from the white of the eagle, which is the emblem of Poland and white Pogon - a knight galloping on a horse, which is the emblem of Lithuania. Both of these emblems are on the red backgrounds of the coat of arms. For this reason, white was at the top on the Polish flag, because in the heraldry of the Republic of Poland the color of the emblem is more important than the background. Everything was precisely spelled out in 1980, when the colors were finally set. In 1955, the flag and the national emblem were officially recognized (but then it was an eagle without a crown). The image of a white eagle in a crown in a red field was settled in 1990.

1st May. International Labour Day (called ‘Święto Pracy’).
A national, public holiday in Poland.

A piece of history.
During the communist era the 1st May was celebrated as a manifestation of support for the Labour Union, the workers, the Party and our socialist country which included everlasting friendship with the Soviet Union whose troops were occupying our country at that time. Colourful marches were organised on that day in all larger cities and towns. Of course presence was obligatory. Red flags, paper cut outs of doves of peace, pictures of party leaders and ‛fathers of socialism' from the Soviet Union were carried by workers, pupils, nurses and representatives from labour unions gathered in their groups. A high moment was when the representatives of the Party stood and took the salute as the crowd passed by. In fact it was a form of terrorizing the population. Those who did not join their colleagues on the march on 1st May were punished at work by salary cuts or a decrease in privileges, students could not sit their exams, and other means of forced coercion. There were, however, always some forms of manifestation of Polish independence against the harsh Soviet rule.

Nowadays.
There are different memories and opinions among Poles nowadays and today the 1st of May is considered by the majority as just a holiday, a day off with a chance to spend some time out of the city and enjoy the first warm days of the year.
In Poland, Labour Day is closely followed by 3rd May Constitution Day. These two dates combined often result in a long weekend called ‘Majówka’. People often travel and ‘Majówka’ is unofficially considered the start of barbecuing season in Poland.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME STARTS

On 25th of March at 02:00:00 clocks are turned forward 1 hour to 03:00:00.

European Summer Time is the variation of standard clock time that is applied in most European countries. There will be more light in the evenings during the summer months meaning more time to celebrate summer.

Today is the first day of SPRING! The first day of astronomical spring coincides with the date of the so-called spring equinox. At the beginning of spring day and night are leveled and last the same - after 12 hours. Then the days will be longer. Spring will last until 21st of June, when we will be welcoming an astronomical summer.

Today is also an ancient pagan tradition in Poland. It requires the drowning of the doll called Marzanna. It is a tradition for people to make straw dolls that are meant to resemble winter, and then burn them and throw into river, as if to say good-bye to winter and welcome spring.

On the first day of spring students in Poland celebrate an informal holiday - a Truant’s Day. It means that students don’t go to school, they just skip their classes.

From women to women on Women's day!

Best wishes for your special day! Feel special and unique on the top of the world!

International Women’s Day started its own history in 1908 in New York when 15 000 women marched through the city demanding shorter work hours, better pay, voting rights. The owner of the factory where these women were working, trying to avoid publicity of their action, closed them in the factory. Unfortunately, fire broke up and 129 women died. To commemorate this day, in 1910 Socialist International in Copenhagen established International Woman’s Day on 8th of March. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

Tomorrow is a Madri Gras! The last day of Carnival!

Mardi Gras, also called Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday, in English, refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

Have a lot of fun!
