Metsä Group has been awarded as Finland’s most startup-friendly company in 2022, receiving the award for the second year running. In 2021, we used 99.6% of raw materials and packaging materials that do not contain fossil oil.

Our objective is that by 2030, we will not use fossil oil-based raw materials or packaging materials in our products. Our main raw material is wood, which is a renewable raw material originating from sustainably managed forests. Fossil oil-based raw materials and packaging materials have been identified and roadmaps to find alternative raw materials have been created by research and development teams. Sourcing teams work in co-operation with business areas to find bio-based alternatives for fossil oil-based raw materials.

The wise use of resources steers our operations. The utilization of industrial side streams is an important way to improve resource efficiency. Our objective is that by 2030, we utilize 100% of our production side streams. Of all the production, the share of side streams accounts to some 5%. Of this, the utilization rate is currently 93%.

The utilisation of side strams is split up to material use, fertilizers and soil improvement, industrial use and energy. The share of fertiliser use has been increasing constantly during the past five years. At the moment 8% of Metsä Group’s utilised side streams are used as fertilisers or landscaping materials.

Today we celebrate a Day without Foil Packaging. The holiday written in the calendar was created in opposition to the increasing production of “foil bags”, found in almost every supermarket or local store.

One of our Businesses, Metsä Board, acts proactively towards producing more and more sustainable packaging for all kinds of goods. In below video you can check new type of packaging designed for baked goods:

In 2021, the share of suppliers covered by Metsä Group Supplier Code of Conduct was 96%. Purchases from suppliers whose backgrounds were evaluated to meet our requirements increased to 88%. Suppliers whose sustainability assessment was passed represented 45% of our spend. The share of traceable raw materials is currently 92%.

We are committed to acting responsibly and expect the same from our partners operating within our supply chain. We expect all of our suppliers to commit to the Metsä Group Code of Conduct for Suppliers. We will develop our supplier sustainability practices further to be able to verify that all our suppliers act according to our environmental, social and economical responsibility requirements.

Our main raw material, wood has full traceability. We work towards ensuring that we know the origin of all our raw materials. In 2021 we improved the traceability of chemicals and packaging materials by extending the use of product safety questionnaires. Currently, our focus currently is to trace the origin of manufacture of the raw materials we purchase.
