One question for...
How to properly put on a referee strap?
Answered by Judyta Wiercinska , International Master Referee (Poland)
Always start by setting the hands up properly — this is essential for fair and secure straps.
Elbows should be down.
Grip centered on the pad.
Hands aligned at the same level between the thumbs.
The distance between thumbs should be approximately the width of a strap.
Palms must touch each other — no gap.
Hands should be straight, with no rotation.
From this correct position, you can start applying the strap:
Pass the strap over both hands, placing the buckle in the center of the competitor’s hand on your side.
Begin with the athlete on your side. Place the strap at the height they request:
Either at wrist level („up”/high),
Or up to 2.5 cm (1 inch) below the wrist line („down”/low).
After looping the second wrist, insert the end of the strap under both wrists, but above the already placed strap.
Thread the strap through the buckle, keeping constant tension throughout the process.
Tighten the strap at your discretion.
If athletes ask for adjustments (tighter or looser), make the necessary changes.
If only one competitor wants it tighter and the other disagrees, assess yourself whether the strap is secure enough.
Once the strap is on, the competitors are allowed to take their grip.
