𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄?

93% of EU SMEs have adopted at least one resource-efficiency measure, such as saving energy, minimizing waste, and recycling.

🔹 25% have gone a step further by crafting a formal strategy to either cut their carbon footprint or reach climate neutrality.
🔹 12% now generate renewable energy onsite, while an additional 23% purchases it from a supplier of renewable energy.

Despite this encouraging trend, SMEs face notable obstacles:
🔹35% report that complex administrative or legal procedures interfere with their progress.
🔹28% cite high costs as a barrier to implementing resource-efficiency measures.

Given that EU SMEs number nearly 26 million, employ around 90 million people, and contribute over half of Europe’s GDP, these efforts - and obstacles- matter greatly.

The Resource-Based View, which research is expanding to include sustainability, argues that assets such as competencies, capabilities, and assets are crucial. Here’s what current research highlights:

🔹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀 - Culture and shared knowledge become strategic sustainability assets when integrated into everyday operations.

Many SMEs struggle with crises because of limited resources and capacity. But strengthening resilience isn’t just a financial matter, it’s a holistic inner-and-outer transformation!

Here are two key pillars shaping SME resilience:

The green transition isn’t just about technology, it’s about internal capacity! In global research, lack of skills is the main barrier identified by SMEs for climate action.

Many SMEs hesitate to invest in sustainability because they are unaware of its economic and environmental benefits, or because they lack internal expertise to assess, plan and implement solutions.

Skills, practical knowledge, and reflective decision-making are key to enabling SMEs to evaluate risks, understand opportunities, and choose credible sustainability pathways.

Building internal capabilities is essential for SMEs aiming to navigate climate challenges with confidence and clarity.

On October 28th, 2025, GreenHost partners met online for the 8th Virtual Meeting, hosted by PAIZ (Lublin). The session focused on finalising the structure of the project’s gamified missions – the core of our educational game aimed at promoting sustainability in the hospitality sector.

Partners presented their ideas for the GreenHost Missions, which are now being shaped around five key themes:

🌱 Mission 1: Internal – Knowledge & Mindset
♻️ Mission 2: Internal – Sustainable Routines & Actions
🏨 Mission 3: External – Guest Experience & Comfort
📦 Mission 4: External – Supply Chain & Procurement
🤝 Mission 5: External – Community, PR & Partnerships

During the meeting, each partner reviewed their mission’s challenges and tasks, discussing alignment between missions.

The team also began exploring possible gamification mechanics and metaphors for the GreenHost game.

The meeting once again demonstrated the strong collaboration and creativity among GreenHost partners, all working together toward a shared goal: developing an engaging, educational, and impactful game that inspires sustainable habits in the lodging sector.
