MAGNACUT vs MAGNAMAX
Two modern powder metallurgy steels designed by Larrin Thomas, but with different priorities.
MagnaCut was developed as a highly balanced combination of corrosion resistance, toughness, hardness and edge retention.
MagnaMax takes the same concept toward significantly higher abrasive wear resistance and longer edge retention.
MAGNACUT
– higher toughness
– very good corrosion resistance
– well suited to thin edge geometry
– easier sharpening
– better resistance to chipping
MAGNAMAX
– higher wear resistance
– longer edge retention
– very good corrosion resistance
– more hard vanadium and niobium carbides
– lower toughness
– more demanding to sharpen
In simple terms:
MagnaCut = toughness and balance
MagnaMax = wear resistance and edge retention
This post is based on data, testing and publications by Larrin Thomas, the designer of MagnaCut and MagnaMax, rather than on individual knifemakers’ personal experiences.
Have you worked with both steels? What are your impressions, and which one would you choose?
