Can a 40-year-old machine tool meet modern requirements without replacing its foundation?

Our latest case study is out in MM Magazyn Przemysłowy: we turned a 40-year-old Voestalpine planer into a modern, heavy-duty plate edge milling machine for a global energy sector client.

The engineering in numbers:

🔴 Capacity: steel plates up to 200 mm thick and 20 m long

🔴 Milling head: angular, ±46° swivel, ISO 50 tooling, 39 kW drive (S1 duty)

🔴 Clamping: 26 independent hydraulic cylinders across modular sections

🔴 Turnaround: full retrofit and back in production in under 10 weeks

The key decision: keep the original cast structure. Its rigidity is hard to match, and reusing it meant no new machine bed and no foundation rebuilding. On top of it we delivered modern CNC accuracy and compliance.

When the design engineers step away from CAD...

Yes, we know the World Cup ended a while ago… but summer vacations meant half the office was scattered around the world, so our official award ceremony for the in-house prediction contest had to wait.

Good news: it finally happened, and the results were too good not to share.

Our Design & Engineering team didn't just take part - they swept the entire podium. Apparently the same eye for detail that nails a perfect CAD model also nails a perfect bracket.

Autumn in the industrial sector marks the official kickoff of the trade fair season. 🍂⚙️

For DTI-Design Technologies International Sp. z o.o, the fall months mean not only intense project ex*****on on the shop floor, but also active networking, discovering emerging manufacturing technologies, and discussing strategic supply chains.

We opened the season with our presence at the International Defence Industry Exhibition (MSPO) organized by Targi Kielce.

Representing our leadership team, CEO Karolina Sywak and our Director of Cooperation & Procurement Piotr Pieniążek attended on-site meetings centered on the rigorous technical standards of modern defense applications. Starting the week with a serious highlight from last week. 28.5 tons of it, to be exact.

Here is a behind-the-scenes look(sound on recommended) at an operation that demanded absolute focus: rigging, lifting, and precision-mounting a 9-meter beam across two columns.

🔴 28.5 tons of cast beam in a single lift

🔴 A 200-ton mobile crane operating right on our customer's shop floor

🔴 Fractions of a millimeter in tolerance across both alignment points

Hours of calculated teamwork and steady hands, condensed into a few seconds of pure mechanical satisfaction.

30 meters of travel.
Error reduced from 0.5 mm to 0.01 mm.
Two independent drives operating as a single unit.

A few days ago, our team was on-site at a client's facility carrying out the advanced calibration of the massive GMC 250 CNC gantry milling machine. There is no compromise in heavy machining, which is why we verify geometry and feedback systems using a laser interferometer.

What makes this calibration a heavy-duty engineering challenge?

• Scale: The installed linear scales are 30 meters long—both on the X1 and X2 axes.
• Gantry synchronization: The X1 and X2 axes are software- and hardware-coupled via a gantry axis function, forming a unified X-axis that drives the smooth, powerful motion of the multi-ton gantry.
• Laser precision: Using the Renishaw laser system allowed us to reduce positioning errors 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟬.𝟱 𝗺𝗺 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟬.𝟬𝟭 𝗺𝗺, compensate for thermal expansion, and achieve perfect guideway parallelism along the entire 30-meter bed.

The result? A machine tool of monumental scale delivering the precision typically expected of compact toolroom centers.
