S4GA S4GA is a global supplier of certified airfield lighting systems for civil and military aviation.

For over a decade, we have designed, manufactured, and delivered solar and mobile AGL that strengthen airfield safety and operational capability worldwide. We deliver complete permanent airfield lighting that operates 365 days on solar and has 5-level protection against system failure. We deliver portable airfield lighting trailer for military and civil applications. We deliver certified temporary airfield lighting for airport construction. We deliver portable helipad lighting for HEMS, air rescue, police, military and private helicopter operators.

Wired AGL systems can show signs of wear over time. When underground cables require frequent splicing and lamps stop working, it becomes an operational issue.

At Elliot Lake Airport in Canada, these issues started affecting passenger, cargo, and air ambulance services.

Approach Navigation Systems, S4GA’s local partner in Canada, installed a Solar PRO airfield lighting system to support the airport’s operations in demanding Canadian conditions.

NVG compatibility is expected in military airfield lighting. But it is not standard across every system.

From conversations with military airfield teams, we hear different approaches from manufacturers: some do not offer NVG compatibility at all, while others make it an optional feature in selected fixtures.

For S4GA military systems, NVG compatibility is built in by default — including our PAPI lights. That’s one less specification to consider before deployment.

ICAO and regional requirements change over time. Airports need to keep their airfield systems aligned with the latest requirements.

That was the case at Cottbus-Neuhausen Airport in eastern Germany, which required a Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) upgrade.

Working with Innovence Airport Systems GmbH, S4GA’s local partner in Germany, the airport upgraded its PAPIs to meet EASA multi-lamp requirements. The installed units offer automatic switchover between primary and secondary PAPI units to maintain continuous operations and support modern, energy-efficient airfield services.

Yes, we crashed a vehicle into a S4GA airfield lighting fixture — and that’s far from the only thing we’ve tried.

What should we do next? Drop your ideas below. “Drop it from the 10th floor”? “Put it in a volcano”? The crazier, the better.

Runway rehabilitation is a major airport infrastructure project.

It can take months, require significant investment, and temporarily change how the airport operates. It can become a challenge when the airport needs to keep running while the work is underway.

So, what are the airport's options and how can solar airfield lighting support the transition? Read in the article:

Solar airfield lighting helps airports maintain flight operations during runway rehabilitation with fast deployment, flexible temporary configurations, and no underground cabling.

What if you could plan AGL maintenance instead of dealing with an unexpected breakdown?

S4GA ALCMS provides airports with that ability. It monitors every single light and sends an early notification when a component shows signs of a potential failure or reaches the end of its service life. The maintenance team can immediately identify the affected light and plan the repair.

What is the true value for airports? Fewer unplanned repairs and more predictable maintenance costs.

LED PAPI is a practical upgrade for airfield operations when replacing halogen fixtures. But at military airbases, the requirements often go further — including easy maintenance and NVG compatibility.

Air Base Minsk Mazowiecki in Poland was upgraded with an LED PAPI from S4GA, tailored to its operational requirements and applicable standards.

The lights comply with NATO standards, as well as international aviation requirements, including ICAO, FAA, EASA, CASA, and others.

Airfields for private jet operations — what lighting do they require?

For smaller-scale private jet flights, airfield lighting needs to be practical, compliant and appropriate for the scale of the operation.

Solar Standard provides a low-intensity, ICAO-compliant lighting option for these types of airfields, without relying on grid power or extensive infrastructure.

A power outage affecting runway lighting can force an airport to reroute flights and cause major delays. But the financial impact of such disruptions is rarely calculated, even though the costs can reach millions of dollars.

"We did a similar study in the past," states Lukasz Kornacki. "The losses from diverting one wide-body plane to another airport and providing hotels for the customers cost almost as much as having a solar system waiting for a potential failure."

With solar airfield lighting available as a backup, there is no need to calculate those costs — the AGL can remain operational even during a power failure.

"Even if you have a major power failure and the ATC tower goes down, you can still press a button [to switch on solar airfield lighting] and let the plane land," Kornacki explains.
