If you want to find out whether surface treatment really works, there's hardly a tougher test than a cross-country rally 🔥 A drivetrain from the Mitsubishi L200 Strakar T1 has just arrived at our workshop, the car that Carlos Sousa drove to fourth place at the 2003 Dakar Rally, and which was later raced by Adam Małysz as well. We're taking care of the shot peening of the bevel gear and other components that endure the heaviest cyclic loads out in the terrain.

The conditions this drivetrain works in are merciless, so every kilometer on the route is a real-world test of what we do every day for the aerospace and automotive industries.

Stay with us, we'll show you the process step by step ⚙️

Prevent Failure Before It Starts

Every year, fatigue failures cost manufacturers millions in unplanned downtime, warranty claims and component replacements. What makes them particularly dangerous is that they usually develop silently—without any visible warning—until catastrophic failure occurs.

In most cases, fatigue cracks initiate at the component surface, where tensile stresses are the highest. With every load cycle, these microscopic cracks propagate deeper into the material until the remaining cross-section can no longer carry the applied load.

This is exactly where shot peening makes the difference.

By introducing a controlled layer of compressive residual stress into the surface, shot peening counteracts harmful tensile stresses responsible for crack initiation. Instead of allowing cracks to open and propagate, the compressive stress layer significantly delays fatigue damage and increases the number of load cycles a component can withstand.

When properly specified and controlled, shot peening can provide:

✔ Significant increase in fatigue life
✔ Higher resistance to crack initiation and propagation
✔ Improved resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)
✔ Higher reliability and operational safety
✔ Lower maintenance and warranty costs
✔ Extended service intervals
✔ Better performance under cyclic loading

However, achieving these benefits requires much more than simply blasting a component with steel shot.

A reliable shot peening process must be verified and controlled through:

🔹 Almen Intensity
🔹 Coverage verification
🔹 Qualified shot media
🔹 Media condition monitoring
🔹 Process repeatability
🔹 Equipment calibration
🔹 Full process traceability

At SP Center Sp. z o.o. every process is carried out under a certified quality management system compliant with AS9100D and IATF 16949, ensuring repeatable and fully controlled results for the aerospace, automotive and industrial sectors.

This poster is part of our SP Center Knowledge Series, where we explain the engineering principles behind shot peening, shot blasting and surface enhancement technologies.

Coverage is not just a number. It’s one of the key factors determining whether shot peening delivers the expected fatigue performance.

Many people associate shot peening primarily with Almen intensity, but coverage is just as important. Even with the correct intensity, insufficient coverage may leave untreated areas where fatigue cracks can initiate.

✔ Coverage ensures uniform compressive residual stress across the surface.

✔ It improves fatigue life and process consistency.

✔ It is evaluated independently from Almen intensity and must be controlled separately.

At SP Center, we help manufacturers increase component durability, optimize product performance, and meet the highest quality standards, including AS9100D and IATF 16949.

This is the next post in our SP Center Knowledge Series, where we share practical insights into shot peening, shot blasting, and surface enhancement technologies.

Which process parameter has the greatest influence on shot peening performance?

It’s a question that often sparks debate among engineers.

Many immediately point to Almen intensity. Others argue that coverage is the decisive factor. Some focus on media size, while others evaluate the process primarily by the achieved compressive residual stress profile.

The reality is more complex.

Shot peening performance is never determined by a single parameter. It is the result of a carefully controlled interaction between:

✔ Almen intensity
✔ Coverage
✔ Media type and size
✔ Impact angle
✔ Air pressure or wheel speed
✔ Stand-off distance
✔ Exposure time
✔ Component geometry
✔ Material properties
✔ Process stability

The real objective is not to maximize one parameter, but to achieve the optimal compressive residual stress profile that delivers the highest fatigue performance without compromising component integrity.

We’d like to hear your opinion.

Which parameter do you consider the most critical for achieving repeatable, high-performance shot peening results?

Share your experience in the comments.

Increased Fatigue Life – Why Shot Peening Makes the Difference

Did you know that most mechanical components do not fail because they are overloaded?

In most cases, failure begins with fatigue — microscopic cracks initiated by millions of repeated load cycles.

Shot peening significantly improves fatigue life by introducing compressive residual stresses into the material surface. These stresses delay crack initiation, slow crack propagation and help components withstand demanding service conditions for much longer.

Depending on the material, component geometry and process parameters, shot peening can increase fatigue life by several times while improving reliability and reducing maintenance costs.

Typical applications include:

✔ Springs
✔ Gears
✔ Crankshafts
✔ Landing Gear
✔ Connecting Rods
✔ Bearings
✔ Turbine Components

At SP Center Sp. z o.o. we believe that understanding the engineering behind the process is just as important as performing it.

Compressive Residual Stress – The Hidden Layer of Strength

Many mechanical failures begin where you can’t see them.

The real advantage of Shot Peening isn’t what happens on the surface—it’s what happens beneath it.

By introducing a controlled layer of compressive residual stress, Shot Peening significantly delays crack initiation, slows crack propagation and dramatically improves fatigue performance.

In this edition of our SP Center Knowledge Series, we explain:

✔ What compressive residual stress is
✔ Why it is essential for fatigue performance
✔ How it improves durability and reliability
✔ The difference between components with and without Shot Peening
✔ Why it is one of the key factors behind the performance of aerospace, automotive and other safety-critical components

At SP Center, we help manufacturers increase component durability, optimize product performance, and meet the highest quality standards, including AS9100D and IATF 16949.

How does Shot Peening actually work?

Shot peening is often described as simply bombarding a surface with steel shot. While technically true, that’s only part of the story.

In reality, shot peening is a precisely controlled cold working process that introduces compressive residual stress beneath the surface of a component, significantly improving its mechanical performance without changing its geometry.

Here’s what happens:

🔹 High-velocity spherical media impacts the surface.
🔹 The material undergoes controlled plastic deformation.
🔹 A layer of compressive residual stress is introduced below the surface.
🔹 Crack initiation and propagation are delayed.
🔹 Fatigue strength, durability and component reliability are significantly increased.

This is why shot peening is widely used for critical components operating under demanding cyclic loads, including:

✈️ Aerospace
🚗 Automotive
⚙️ Powertrain
🌬️ Energy
🏥 Medical
🛡️ Defence

At SP Center, we help manufacturers increase component durability, optimize product performance, and meet the highest quality standards, including AS9100D and IATF 16949.

This is the second post in the SP Center Knowledge Series, where we share practical insights into shot peening, shot blasting and advanced surface engineering technologies.

Shot blasting or shot peening?

Although both processes use blasting media, their purpose and final effect are completely different.

🔹 Shot blasting is primarily used for surface cleaning and preparation. It removes rust, scale, oxides, paint and other contaminants while creating the required surface profile for subsequent operations such as painting or coating.

🔹 Shot peening is a controlled surface-strengthening process. It introduces beneficial compressive residual stresses, improving fatigue resistance, durability and the reliability of components exposed to cyclic loads.

At SP Center, we provide both processes in accordance with customer specifications, with a strong focus on repeatability, process control and quality.
