To put it simply, the equalizer is a tool enabling to adjust the volume of individual frequencies of the sound source. While we use the track volume fader to change the overall volume of the source, we use the equalizer to control, or even turn on and off, individual frequencies, i.e. parts of the spectrum of that sound.

In the previous article we analyzed the most common EQ-ing errors. Now, when we feel more confident, let’s move forward and consider the following 8 useful equalization tips.

In the Internet, you may find thousands of advises like “Equalize the vocals like this” or “Equalize the guitar like that”, etc. Some of those advices are very specific saying ‘cut off the frequencies around 1 kHz’ or ‘emphasize the frequencies in 400 Hz diapason’. But all those advices are too general and could only harm your work because you’ll just turn the k***s blindly.

Let’s start from just the opposite. We suggest you to learn the most common errors made while equalization, to start building your work on the right grounds and to further continue gaining the priceless experience.

Gaining good skills with equalizing is, of course, impossible without hours of practicing. But everybody is always impatient not willing to endlessly tweaking the k***s. That’s why the newcomers go for an ‘easy way to do it’ and that ‘easy way’ often plays a bad trick upon them in the end.

Sooner or later, any musical producer or composer comes to the need of buying a midi controller. It’s certainly possible to create music using just the computer’s capabilities, but it might not be really convenient. And yet, you can hardly expect decent results if you use just samples and a piano roll.

There is a huge amount of both classical and experimental techy controllers which also vary in type depending on the particular musical genre they are used in.

This article will outline the types of controllers and their features that you should pay attention to in the first place.

Every new completed mix brings us more confidence and understanding of what we do. Less k***s are tweaked randomly, and the entire mixing becomes a much better planned process.

Talking about tonal balance, the perception of the mix and the feelings the user receives from listening can drastically change depending on the presence or absence of particular frequencies. For example, if a mix is rich with high frequencies, we call it ‘bright’. If, on the contrary, it has little high frequencies, we call it ‘dark’ or ‘dull’. Depending on the amount of low frequencies, a mix is called ‘thick’ or ‘massive’ if it has a lot of bass, otherwise we call it ‘thin’.

Tonal balance is an important instrument helping influence the listener’s perception of the mix.
