New IMDG Lithium Battery Regulations Effective 2025-2026
The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code Amendment 42-24 introduces pivotal updates aimed at
bolstering the safety and clarity of DG transport by sea.
Effective voluntarily from January 1, 2025, and mandatory
from January 1, 2026, enhanced classification for
Battery Powered Vehicles. The amendment introduces
new UN numbers to distinctly classify vehicles powered
by different battery types, thereby improving clarity
and safety in transportation.
UN3556 is assigned to vehicles powered by lithium-ion
batteries under the "New" Proper Shipping Name
"Vehicle, lithium ion battery powered". UN3557 is
assigned to vehicles powered by lithium metal batteries
under the "New" Proper Shipping Name
"Vehicle, lithium metal battery powered".
UN3558 is assigned to vehicles powered by
sodium ion battery under the "New" PSN
"Vehicle, lithium sodium ion battery powered".
These classifications facilitate precise identification
and handling of such vehicles during its Ocean transport.
Additionally, damaged or defective lithium batteries
must be removed from articles and packaged
separately to prevent potential hazards.
Packaging and Labeling Enhancements
Vehicles equipped with lithium batteries can be transported
without additional packaging if they are stable and secure. However, if stability is compromised, specialized bracing
or framing is required to ensure safety. Labeling requirements
have been strengthened to ensure all hazards are clearly
visible, even for items in fully enclosed packaging, thereby improving hazard communication during transport.
Implementation Timeline
The amendment allows for voluntary application starting
January 1, 2025, providing a transitional period for
stakeholders to adapt to the new regulations.
Mandatory enforcement begins on January 1, 2026,
making it imperative for all parties involved in maritime
hazardous materials transport to comply with the updated
IMDG Code by this date.
