Established in 2008 by Prof. Cecília Roque. We are dedicated to minimal biomimetic systems.

We are a multidisciplinary team in Applied and Computational Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Physics of Materials. The Biomolecular Engineering Group @ UCIBIO, REQUIMTE (FCT/UNL) in interface with iBET, was established in 2008 by Prof. Cecília Roque and is composed by a multidisciplinary team with expertise in Applied and Computational Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. Our group is dedicated to the molecular engineering of interaction partners with biological, synthetic and hybrid properties and to combine them with stimuli-responsive platforms to be applied in the Biocatalysis, Bioseparation, Biosensing and Biomedical areas.

Between May and September this year, Catarina Faustino carried out part of her PhD research at Yael Politi´s lab, BCUBE, TU Dresden, in Germany, within the framework of the EUTOPIA Alliance. During her stay, Catarina used advanced microscopy techniques and image analysis pipelines to study cephalopods´ skin. She also participated in several activities, including BCUBE Day and Dresden Science Night 2026, and contributed to teaching for the Biomaterials course.

Now, she’s back to UCIBIO@NOVA-FCT to continue her research at the Biomolecular Engineering Lab and Seatox Lab.

With the beginning of the school year, we wanted to refresh our knowledge and teach our new team members how to stay safe in the lab.

From identifying risks to learning how to deal with spillages and how to help a colleague who is unconscious, this activity was a great reminder that safety a crucial part of our work.

Another year, another great edition of the European Researchers’ Night!

The Biomolecular Engineering Lab prepared three interactive activities to present proteins and their applications to visitors of all ages:

🏷️ 🔦 From gelatin to security tags: Finding the “real” medicine from the counterfeit packages using invisible light tags, simulating the gelatin authentication tags made in the lab.

🧬 🌍 Proteins around the World: A guessing game of proteins, the animals they came from and their various and exciting applications.

🪝 🧪 Fishing for Proteins: From a solution “pool” participants used a fishing rod to “fish” a target protein, simulating how proteins are captured and isolated during purification in the lab.

Thank you to every visitor who stopped by ! It was a pleasure sharing our work in the lab, playing games and answering everyone’s questions.

From 27th-29th July, Maria Pinho attended the 4th International Conference on Materials and Nanomaterials in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain. Maria gave a poster presentation about the work she has been developing as a research assistant for the SUBTLE project entitled "Bio-based optical ionogels for anti-counterfeiting tags". The M&Ns 2026 was a great opportunity to share our results in the scope of SUBTLE project and connect with the international scientific community.

From 7th-10th July, Catarina Faustino attended the 59th European Marine Biology Symposium in Peniche, Portugal. Catarina gave an oral presentation about the work she has been developing during her PhD entitled "The anatomy and biochemistry of squid´s camouflage and its biotechnological value", and received the award for best presentation! Her talk provided important insights into the field of marine biology and explored its value as an extraordinary source of novel compounds towards blue biotechnology innovations.
