How getting a worm bin can reduce your carbon emissions AND transform kitchen waste into top quality compost....

I estimate that my four person household produces, roughly, 250 kg (1/4 tonne) of kitchen waste a year - or nearly 1 kg of banana skins, coffee grounds, pea pods etc a day in summer, a bit less in winter. (Probably higher than average as we cook most meals from scratch, using a lot of fresh veg).

In the UK overall, it’s estimated that 9.5 million tonnes of food waste are produced each year. This accounts for 36 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), according to the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP).

From these figures, we can work out that each tonne of food waste creates about 3.7 tonnes of CO2e. Which in turn means that my estimated 0.25 tonnes of kitchen waste alone could account for a staggering 0.9 tonne of CO2e (3.7 x 0.25) each year - IF we sent it to landfill!

Composting this waste in a worm bin will not cut these CO2e emissions to zero. However, it will significantly reduce them. Healthy wormeries run on aerobic decomposition, minimising the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas associated with anaerobic decomposition in landfills. Additionally, the resulting compost is fantastic quality and can be used to enrich the potting mix in our containers, helping to create a more sustainable garden.

Worm bins are a brilliant solution for small space composting. If you don't have one - and don't have a phobia of worms - I highly recommend looking into getting one in 2024.
