As you can see, since 2006 Portugal’s immigration policy had generally been moving toward simplification and more flexible rules. Now, the trend seems to be going in the opposite direction.

Will this change again in the future — and when? Unfortunately, no one can really predict that.

But if you love Portugal and see your future here, we can help you with residency applications, permanent residency, citizenship, and all the other related relocation processes 🇵🇹

The amendments to the Citizenship Law have been published in the Diário da República. The standard residency period required to apply for citizenship has now been increased to 10 years.

The new rules come into effect on May 19.

At the same time, the proposal allowing citizenship to be revoked did not pass the constitutional review and was removed from the law.

🇵🇹 Three important immigration law changes currently being discussed or already approved in Portugal.

If you may qualify for one of these citizenship or residency pathways, it may be worth applying as soon as possible before the changes enter into force.

🇵🇹 Portugal may soon close another residency pathway through children and vocational courses.

💬 Comment from our real estate specialist: Portugal is focusing on stimulating housing supply through tax incentives. The government is trying to simultaneously support construction, expand the long-term rental market, and limit speculative demand from non-residents.

For non-residents, the market becomes slightly less attractive: the new 7.5% IMT increases the entry threshold for purchasing property. On the other hand, for those planning relocation and residency in Portugal, the long-term strategy may become even more attractive.

Portugal’s President has signed the amendments to the citizenship law today.

📌 Now waiting time is changing: from 5 years to 10 years (and 7 years for CPLP citizens).

⏳ The law has not entered into force yet. It will only become effective after publication in Diário da República, which is expected in the next 1-3 days.

✔️ The President also stated that applications already submitted should not be affected by the new changes.

📩 If you already have 5 years of residency (or are close to reaching 5 years), you still have a chance to apply under the current rules before the law is published, but you probably have just 1 or 2 days.

⚖️ We work with a licensed lawyer who has access to submit citizenship applications. This means no appointment is needed, so there is still a last chance to submit your application on time.

Message us and we will review your situation.

Have you already filed your tax return, or are you still procrastinating? 👀

📌 IRS 2026 (income tax for 2025)
All tax residents in Portugal are required to file a tax return, even if their income was zero. You may be considered a tax resident even if you haven’t received your residency card yet.

📅 When can you do it?
From April 1 to June 30, 2026.
If you miss the deadline, you may face a fine and lose certain tax benefits.

💰 What happens after submitting tax declaration?
You might receive a tax refund if you overpaid, or you may need to pay additional tax depending on your situation.

🌐 How to do it?
Through Portal das Finanças

💼 How we can help
We can file your tax return remotely, making sure everything is accurate and helping you avoid overpaying or facing penalties.

We also provide consultations to help you understand the Portuguese tax system and optimize your taxes — both for individuals and businesses. We can also assist with applying for special tax statuses (such as NHR 2.0).

⏳ The deadline is June 30, but it’s better not to leave it until the last minute. May is often the best time to file, as the system is already running smoothly and accountants still have availability.

✉️ Message us “Tax” to get help with your tax return or to schedule a consultation with a tax specialist.

⏳ We expect the President’s decision on the changes to the Portuguese citizenship law next week

📌 These changes include increasing the required residency period to 10 years.

📅 The law was sent to the President on March 13, and he has 20 days to decide — so the deadline is now very close.

⚖️ He can either:
— approve the law
— veto it and send it back to Parliament

🚨 If you’re close to applying, this is a critical moment.

🤝 Together with our lawyer, we’ve been working to ensure our clients can apply for citizenship in time.
Right now, we have the possibility to submit applications even for those who have not yet completed the full 5 years.

📩 If you have legal residency in Portugal for 4+ years, message us. We’ll review your case and confirm if we can apply for you now.

⏱️ Next week may be the last chance to do this.
