“Monchique vila bonita,
De onde a onde salpicada

Teolinda Marreiro’s words about Monchique could hardly describe it better: a beautiful town, scattered across the hills and surrounded by endless green.

And that is exactly what makes Monchique so different from the Algarve you may have seen along the coast.

This is the Algarve of cork oak forests, eucalyptus and chestnut trees, winding mountain roads and quiet villages where life still follows its own rhythm.

Monchique is often called the hiking mecca of the Algarve, with trails leading through the Serra de Monchique and up towards Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve.

But this mountain town has much more to offer than hiking.

It is famous for its food – especially the local porco preto and traditional mountain dishes. For medronho, the strong spirit made from the fruit of the strawberry tree. For its handmade ceramics and other local crafts.

And then there is cycling. With its challenging climbs, winding mountain roads and spectacular views, Monchique has become a favourite destination for road cyclists looking to discover a very different side of the Algarve.

Wild Atlantic waves in winter, warm summer evenings by the sea — this is Monte Clérigo on Portugal’s West Coast 🌊

One of the places I recommend when planning an Algarve trip, especially for nature lovers and surfers of all levels. But Monte Clérigo is more than a beautiful beach: its charming little village, pretty houses overlooking the Atlantic and two restaurants make it a lovely base to explore the West Coast Algarve.

Even though Monte Clérigo was recently voted one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, it has thankfully kept its authentic character and still feels far from overcrowded.
