Big update from AIMA on how to renew your expired TRC (residence permit)!

📢 There are now TWO official ways to renew:

🔸 Option 1 – For TRCs expired ON or BEFORE June 30, 2025
✅ You will receive an automatic email from AIMA, in ascending order of expiry dates (starting from 2022 to 2025).
✅ Make sure to check the email you used with SEF (linked to your file).
⚠️ Ensure your email is in fact registered, still active and accessible!

🔸 Option 2 – For TRCs expired AFTER June 30, 2025
✅ A new AIMA portal has been launched for manual renewal:

A AIMA volta a informar que, a partir do próximo dia 4 de novembro de 2024, o Termo de Responsabilidade (Modelo 4) referente às condições de subsistência apenas será aceite se a assinatura do subscritor estiver devidamente reconhecida por Notário, Advogado ou Solicitador.

Recorde-se que, através desta declaração, o residente declara que se responsabiliza pelo cidadão estrangeiro no que respeita às condições de estada em Território Nacional, às despesas de afastamento, se necessário, e ao cumprimento da legislação em vigor em Portugal.

In the final stretch of the process of the transition of border control skills, and in the countdown to the extinction of Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras , the National Director of SEF, Paulo Leitão Batista, presented, yesterday afternoon, the stock of the operational activity developed in the last two years.

The presentation took place within the framework of the visit of the Minister of Internal Administration, José Luís Carneiro, to the Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon, and included the presence of several police officers and their respective top executives who, from October 29, will be involved in the inherited mission of SEF in the field on land, air and maritime border control.

It is recalled that the restructuring of the border control system and the reform of the regime of the internal security forces and services will come into effect, transferring SEF's air border control responsibilities to PSP and land borders and maritime to GNR.

With the restructuring of the border control system and the reshuffle of the regime of forces and internal security services coming into effect on 29 October, the responsibilities of Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras will pass to other agencies such as the PSP and the GNR.

In this regard, a cycle of conferences has begun today in order to transmit knowledge on subjects such as removal of foreigners, control of the permanence and activity of foreigners, crime associated with illegal immigration, smartboarders, asylum and temporary protection and temporary installation centers.

The opening session was chaired by the Minister of Internal Administration, José Luís Carneiro, the Secretary General of Internal Security, Paulo Vizeu Pinheiro, and the National Director of SEF, Paulo Batista.

The series of conferences takes place today and tomorrow at the Higher Institute of Police Sciences and Homeland Security in Lisbon.

As per SEF:

More than 29 million attempted calls in a single day overload the system

The Contact Centre of the Foreign and Border Service (SEF) has been registering, in recent days, an overload of calls caused by the use of 'dialers' services on multiple mobile phones and making simultaneous calls.
For example, last October 17 alone, more than 29 million attempted calls were made, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., the vast majority originating from services available on the Internet or mobile applications that allow remarking automatic action and they end up overloading the system.
In that sense, and because this is a completely new situation with regard to demand level and corresponding system pressure, SEF is studying alternatives to implement, soon, a new solution based on a service model o in digital channels, with faster treatment, by form considerably reducing current callers.

This multichannel and segmented service model will allow, once implemented, an increased volume of targeted contacts for automatic channels, as well as agile sorting for correct channels and exception situations to be targeted s for a Contact Centre Operator
As for the complaints and complaints with suspects about the scheduling system, SEF communicated them to the Ministry of Public as soon as it became aware of them. Some of the resulting surveys run terms in the SEF by delegation of skills from the Public Ministry.
The SEF Contact Center currently has 50 operators that answer, on average, more than 3,000 daily calls, Monday to Friday, in 21 languages: Portuguese, German, Amharic, Arabic, Kazakh, Cabo Verde Creole, Creole de São Tomé Prin cipe, Spanish, French, Georgian, Hindi, Hungarian, English, Nepali, Persian, Romanian, Russian, Tiger, Turkish, Ukrainian and Uzbek.

New visa for foreign workers begins in Portugal.

According to the Government, the changes to the legal regime for the entry, stay, departure and removal of foreign citizens from the national territory establish "procedures that allow attracting regulated and integrated immigration, for the development of the country, changing the way in which the public administration relates with immigrants and guarantee conditions for the integration of immigrants".

Among the new measures is the creation of a visa of limited duration that allows the legal entry of immigrants in Portugal with the objective of looking for work.

This visa to look for work in Portugal is valid for 120 days and can be extended for another 60 days, being granted at Portuguese consular posts, which communicate immediately to the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) and the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP).
Citizens of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) will also have a visa facilitation regime in Portugal, within the scope of the agreement on mobility between CPLP member states.

The new regime puts an end to the quota regime for immigration, makes it easier to obtain a residence visa for foreign students who attend higher education in Portugal and allows digital nomads to grant a residence or temporary stay visa.

The new regime for the entry of immigrants into Portugal comes into force today, with a six-month visa for foreigners looking for work in the country.
