Geo Logica is looking forward to another great year and wishes all our connections a great 2026 full of learning opportunities and new discoveries.

We are back in the field researching new topics and creating new courses while consolidating existing ones.

Hope we have the chance to meet and share our latest findings with you somewhere in this planet in constant!

Last week Geo Logica participated in the ICE 2025 that took place in Rio de Janeiro.

Our booth at the exhibition area presented Geo Logica range of professional field-based training courses and was visited by many past and future clients, partners, long time friends and geoscience students from several Brazilian Universities.

Our founder Pedro Barreto chaired a session on together with Pedro Arriola and presented ongoing research being developed in collaboration with Deise Silveira from the University of Paraná, regarding and deformation processes in Santa Cruz Diapir, Basin, .

After this successful event, there was still time to go to the field and see a planet in constant change while rock climbing the world renowned Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf).

Stay tuned to our media and website for more info on future dates of training courses!

Geo Logica in collaboration with clastic sedimentation expert Dra. Deise Silveira from the Basin Analysis Research Lab (LABAP) at Federal University of Paraná (Brazil) is studying soft-sediment deformation and fluid escape features on the flanks of the Santa Cruz Diapir (Portugal).

During the last two weeks we spent the days in this amazing locality describing in detail (every five centimetres!!) the sedimentary sequence and its structural control. Not even the heavy rain and strong winds put us aside our goal.

The data collected shows promising and unprecedented structures and processes that will undoubtedly bring new ideas and concepts related with halokinetic sedimentary sequences, including major implications on reservoir property enhancement, fluid migration and hydrocarbon accumulation. We are extremelly excited to work the field data collected in the upcoming months and to be able to present these at an international conference before the end of the year.

These and other features associated with halokinesis are explained during the Geo Logica salt tectonics training course that will take place in October 2025. For more info about this course please visit our GeoTraining page: https://www.geologica.xyz/salt-tig-geo-logica-field-trip-i2

One of the great things about Geo Logica is the people we meet and the friends we make while discovering the history of Planet Earth and the natural wonders created during its evolution.

Moments and friendships get logged in our Geohuman Record and, as in rocks, the history made can outcrop and be read from us many years later.

Another successful incursion into the always challenging realm of Praia do Telheiro Geosite.

Never easy to get there and never staying long enough to admire all aspects of this geological wonder.

Three Geological Eras, three major unconformities and 320 million years of Earth history condensed in a singular and brutal outcrop.

Come with Geo Logica to discover a planet in constant change🌍❣️

Hey Geo colleagues! Are you really going to miss the early bird prices for the Geo Logica “ ”?

This FT will happen this year between 8th and 12th September in the Region. It will have pleanty of amazing geology, history and geo fun!

We will visit one the most historically renown provinces in the world. were already here nearly 2000 ac. pioneering feasts. The “Salted Man”, one of the most iconic archeological finds of its age, triggering a whole new period of research in and understanding of the Iron Age, was found in this region in the late XVI century.

The field trip will explore the archeological aspects by looking to the findings at Salinen Austria AG mine and, from within an allochthonous salt , will explore its structure internal, composition and heterogeneities.

In the “ burg of the salt “ region, where many salt wars have been fought throughout millennia, and techniques have been mastered during the last centuries, the field trip will unravel mountains of salt, covered by pinnacles of reefs, lagoons and shelves, all interacting throughout the formation, amalgamation and closing of seas.

The result couldn’t be more complex. interaction between salt and sediments, active, passive and reactive diapirism… and the recurrent thought: is it “Mega nappe” thrust or highly squeezed compressional salt settings? Or the classic mix?!

The answers to these questions is what Geo Logica is looking forward with this field trip, and it couldn’t be better explained then by Oscar Fernandez, that has been relooking to this region with a completely updated and fully integrated mindset.

To our dear field trips past participants, Pedro and Oscar can only guarantee that this will be another field trip following the already world famous Geo Logica standards! To the new participants, you will need to find out yourselves what that means. One thing for sure, you won’t regret to see this planet in constant change🌍❣️

Evidences of recent (geologically speaking!) tectonism at Fonte da Telha (⚠️not the fault that generated today’s Earthquake⚠️)

Today I was literally shaken by an earthquake! Not the first one I’ve felt in my life, but surely the most intense one.

After checking earthquake data online, I realized that the epicenter was not far from where I was, roughly 10km away, close to the fishing village of Fonte da Telha.

My first thought … what if there were any surface evidences of the earthquake in that area?

That thought immediately made me rush to the coast (after giving enough time for an eventual tsunami to happen!) and drive along the Costa da Caparica escarpment looking for recent surface ruptures or collapses. Luckily for everyone, I didn’t managed to find any recent disturbances along the way.

Upon arriving to Fonte da Telha, I managed to talk with locals that described the earthquake as one of the most intense that they ever felt. More intense than the one from August, 26th last year. This is not surprising since today’s Earthquake epicenter was not more than 5 km away from this fishing village and at a depth around 7km.

People there described a loud noise followed by trees shaking severely, walls “waving”(!) and dishes and pans falling from cabinets.

After taking a closer look to the outcrops along the escarpment, I managed to find an approximately NE-SW trending high angle reverse fault offsetting ca. 1-2m the Pliocene strata (photo). Although it seems part of the same trend as the Lower Tagus Fault System, there was no evidences that this fault moved today, nor in recent times( human scale!)

Nevertheless, the Lower Tagus Fault System was created by alpine compression, i.e. result of collisional stresses between North Africa and Iberia, probably reactivating older and deeper faults.

The Lower Tagus Fault System was responsible for changing the Tagus River course about 2,5 millions years ago. It has been reactivated since and is still active, as we just witness today!

An evidence that we live on a planet in constant change🌍❣️

Today at 13:24 GMT I felt the building where I live shaking like if a train had hit it… two strong shakes spaced by one or two seconds … P-wave followed by S-wave??

Google promptly reported an Earthquake of 4.2 Magnitude near shore of Fonte da Telha, some 10 km away from me.

Some minutes after The Portuguese authority IPMA reported a Magnitude of 4.7 near the same location… some minutes later … the website went down..again the same that happened after August earthquake!

Leaving here a quick draft of probable structural framework of today’s earthquake: Sinistral transpressional fault system?! The Lower Tagus Fault System on the move? To be confirmed when focal mechanism is made available.
