The Douro Valley is one of the most magical places in Portugal, and certainly the most beautiful wine region in the world. Being the world’s oldest demarcated and certified wine region, it’s definitely one of a kind.

Even though I’ve been here many times, going on a 7-day river cruise just feels completely different. There’s so much in the valley you don’t get to see by just driving around in a car. From the river perspective, you watch in awe as you sail past historic vineyard terraces, as well as the upper stretches of Douro Superior where there are no roads, no hints of civilisation, that makes it super magical.

Being a Portuguese sommelier, it makes me super proud to curate a river cruise journey and wine experience in own home country, and I’m able to handpick selected vineyards and get to to exclusive and premium wine tastings to share the taste, flavours and cultural heritage of Portugal.

Attended Grandes Escolhas 2025 in Lisbon — one of Portugal’s biggest and most exciting wine exhibitions 🍷

Every year, it brings together the country’s top producers, winemakers, and wine lovers to celebrate what makes Portuguese wine so special — its diversity, creativity, and sense of place. From crisp Atlantic whites to bold reds from the Douro and Alentejo, every glass told a story of passion and terroir.

It’s incredible to see how Portugal’s wine scene keeps evolving — dynamic, daring, and full of surprises. I’m here for it, and I can’t wait to share some of my favourite discoveries from this year’s edition 🇵🇹✨

It pays tribute to the family’s matriarch — Avó Sabica — a woman of quiet strength, generous wisdom, and unconditional love, who inspired generations through her unwavering values and grace.

I’d like to thank you all for your birthday messages. Celebrating my birthday with a visit to vineyards and wineries has become a tradition, and the best option. 🍷🍇

This year, the “victim” was Casa de Sabicos. We went back in time to the 4th generation with the top-of-the-line “Avó Sabica 2013, Red,” one of the most extraordinary wines ever produced in Alentejo!

Last Christmas, I went on my first-ever river cruise, which sailed from Germany to France! Along with Janz Anton-Iago In The Mood For Life & River Cruise King / DNA Tours Ltd., this adventure turned out to be more than just Christmas markets, festive cheer and drinking glühwein — it was a festive journey through some of the most enchanting wine regions in Europe! 🍷✨

From the crisp, minerally whites of Franconia along Germany’s Main River to the aromatic delights of Alsace in France, each stop brought a new flavor, a new story, and a glass raised in joy.

As a sommelier, there’s nothing more exciting than stepping into the heart of a wine region — and my first-ever river cruise delivered exactly that, with a festive twist.

From the dry, elegant Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau wines in Franconia along the Main River, to the expressive Gewürztraminer and Rieslings of Alsace in Riquewihr and Strasbourg — each stop was a deep dive into local terroir and tradition.

I even get to taste Pinot Noir from Alsace, and a blend of Grenache and Syrah from Rhône wine region!

Featured Winery 🍷 Terras do Avô, Seixal, Madeira Island 🍇 The gastronomic, flavourful wines of are unforgettable. ✨

This wine producer, Terras do Avô, or translated as Grandfather’s Land, is a family business run by father and daughter, Duarte and Sofia, both agricultural engineers. Duarte Caldeira took over his father’s land, along with his children, and drew production from 32 small plots of vineyards from the municipality of Seixal.

The first wine from Terras do Avô was launched in 1992. The constant desire to make different wines resulted in a range of seven wines, the last being the first sparkling wine from Madeira, starting in 2014 and going on the market in 2016.

The wines here are incredible expressive, with lots of mineralogy and freshness, thanks to the volcanic soil and the dominance of the Atlantic Ocean. Yet they’re always touched with elegance and great aromas of tropical fruits. Even better to drink them on the winery’s beautiful terrace with the most extraordinary view of Seixal, with the sea and the mountain converge together.
