Which European economies are the most competitive in 2026?

Competitiveness is about more than the size of an economy.

The most recent IMD World Competitiveness Ranking looks at factors including economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency and infrastructure to assess how economies create an environment for businesses to thrive.

Among Europe’s top economies are:

🇨🇭 Switzerland
🇩🇰 Denmark
🇮🇪 Ireland
🇳🇱 Netherlands
🇸🇪 Sweden

The more intriguing question would be:

What makes these economies stand out?

Efficient institutions, business environment, infrastructure and economic performance can all contribute to an economy’s ability to attract businesses, talent and capital.

For Europe, that makes a difference.

They can influence where businesses invest, where talent goes and where economic opportunities emerge.

Which European economy do you think is the best one for sustainable growth?

Eurozone inflation is back above 3%.

So… what does that mean for your financial future?

Eurozone inflation rose from 2.9% in July to 3.3% in August.

But here’s where it gets interesting.

Energy inflation jumped to 14.3%

While at the same time:

📉 Services inflation fell to 3.0%, down from 3.3%

📉 Core inflation fell to 2.4%, down from 2.5%

So the question is:

What is actually driving it?

Because inflation can influence:

→ The cost of everyday living

→ How much you need to save for retirement

→ The purchasing power of your savings

→ The cost of borrowing

→ Planning for your family’s future

→ Maintaining your lifestyle over the long term

→ Interest-rate expectations

→ Bond yields

→ Equity valuations

→ Consumer spending

→ Portfolio positioning

And this is why looking at the long-term picture matters.

💶 Europe is sitting on a huge pool of household savings. But how can savings play a bigger role in supporting long-term investment?

That’s the idea behind the EU’s Savings and Investments Union (SIU).

In 2026, the initiative continues to develop across banking, investment, pensions and financial literacy.

But what could this mean for European savers, investors and businesses?

🏦 The ECB has kept interest rates unchanged. What does it mean for you?

At its latest meeting on 23 July 2026, the European Central Bank decided to keep its key interest rates unchanged.

The current rates are:
• Deposit facility: 2.25%
• Main refinancing operations: 2.40%
• Marginal lending facility: 2.65%

But what does this mean beyond the headlines?

💰 For your savings
Interest rates can influence the return you receive on savings. When rates change, it can be worth reviewing whether your savings strategy still aligns with your goals.

🏠 For borrowing
Interest rates can affect the cost of mortgages, loans and other forms of credit. Even small changes can have an impact on long-term borrowing costs.

📈 For investments
Interest-rate expectations can influence financial markets, bond yields, business borrowing costs and investor sentiment.

👴 For long-term financial planning
Economic conditions can change over time. That's why your financial strategy should consider not only today's interest rates, but also your long-term goals, risk tolerance and financial circumstances.

The ECB continues to take a meeting-by-meeting, data-dependent approach, while aiming to maintain inflation at its 2% medium-term target.

📌 The takeaway
An ECB interest-rate decision may sound like something that only concerns economists and financial markets.

But interest rates can influence the way we save, borrow, invest and plan for the future.

At GPI Europe, we believe that understanding the wider financial environment is an important part of making informed long-term financial decisions.

💭 Which area do you think interest rates affect most: savings, borrowing or investments?👇

Eurozone inflation is rising again. What does it mean for your money?

Eurozone inflation rose to 2.9% in July 2026, up from 2.8% in June.

But what does that actually mean for you?

Inflation isn't just an economic number. It can affect your purchasing power, savings, investments and long-term financial plans.

💶 1. Your purchasing power
When prices rise, the same amount of money buys less than it did before.
That means €10,000 today may not have the same purchasing power in the future.

🏦 2. Your savings
If the return on your savings is lower than inflation, the real value of your money can gradually decline.

📊 3. Your investments
Inflation can influence interest rates, business costs, consumer spending and ultimately financial markets.

This is one reason why long-term financial planning shouldn't focus only on keeping money in cash.

👴 4. Your retirement
Inflation can have an even bigger impact over a 20- or 30-year retirement horizon.
A retirement plan that looks sufficient today may need to account for the future cost of living.

So, should you be worried?

Not necessarily.

Inflation can move up and down, and one month's figure doesn't determine the long-term direction of the economy.

The important question is:
Is your financial plan prepared for changing economic conditions?

At GPI Europe, we believe effective financial planning means looking beyond today's numbers and considering how your financial goals may be affected over the long term.

📌 Your money has a future. Your financial plan should too.

💬 Is inflation something you currently consider when planning your financial future?👇

Should you save more, or invest more?

In Just Keep Buying, Nick Maggiulli uses years of market data to answer this age-old question. Rather than chasing the perfect time to invest, he shows why consistent, regular investing tends to outperform attempts to time the market, while also challenging some common assumptions about saving and spending along the way.

This book is well suited to professionals, business owners, and individuals who want practical, evidence-based guidance rather than opinion or guesswork. Maggiulli's clear writing style makes it accessible even for those newer to investing.

Key lessons from the book

Saving has a limit, but investing has far greater long-term potential.

Buying assets regularly, regardless of price, builds wealth over time.

Market downturns are normal and often present buying opportunities.

Avoiding debt and building an emergency fund come before investing.

💭 GPI takeaway

Consistency often matters more than perfect timing.

Small, regular investments can add up more than expected.

Data-driven decisions help reduce emotional reactions to the market.
