Portugal’s laid back lifestyle might set you dreaming of life in a pair of flop flops and shorts armed with sunnies and a surfboard. It’s doable BUT there are some strange little details to take on board. The major one is that it’s illegal to drive wearing flip flops. The fine for doing so is considerable so don’t get caught. Indeed if you are serious about living in Portugal it is important to find out it’s rules and regulations. It makes integration and acceptance so much easier. You will still wear your cool clothes but you won’t land up in hot water for doing so. it a win win in our book!

Portugal has a rich history of Roman occupation as this pillar in Chaves attests to. Situated in the north eastern part of Portugal Chaves is home to thermal waters and a relaxing style of life. The Douro valley lies to its South and Spain is a hop skip and a jump away. We know many immigrants are looking at overlooked towns in Portugal and suggest this might warrant further investigation.

August in Portugal is confusing in a delightful way. People go to the beaches both coastal and inland, to ’chill’ but what really happens is they quietly boil. It’s searingly hot but its a happy time nevertheless. If there is one thing Portuguese people know how to do well it’s how to relax and let the world pass by. August is when they put in the most practice!!! Don’t expect anything much to happen if you are waiting for documents or anything else. Holidays are serious and next month the boring bits might be attended to. For now take a lesson from the Portuguese and hit the beach.

This is what so many of us dream of and Portugal has it all. Glorious beaches and seascapes. Seriously the world might be a little'too much with us' but it's good to remember that a day at the beach can restore most of us to happiness.

Yes we know Portugal is debating a way to balance its identity with its needs. What makes it anything but a simple path is balancing the constitution with any new rules. In simple terms it means that no decisions have been made on changes to the current laws applied to foreigners wanting to live and work in the country. So it’s not quite last chance saloon at the Ponto Final but if you are keen to live in Portugal it might be good to get a move on with your plans.

The proposed changes to Portugal’s migration rules have not yet become law and will be debated by parliament. It should be noted however that any of the proposed measures that do pass into law will be retroactively dated to June 19. This means that any submissions made after that date will fall under the new rulings.

The path to Portuguese citizenship is currently being reviewed by the government. Key changes will be a longer period before citizenship can be acquired and a much greater emphasis on integration via language and knowledge of Portugal. No changes have been promulgated as yet so it’s not clear if the time period towards citizenship will be retroactive or not but it is going to increase from the current five year period to anywhere between six to ten years.

Narrow streets and cobblestones have great charm but you might want to consider these issues when buying your new home in Portugal. Buildings that are close together often block out light and can make a place much colder and damper. Even the loveliest of neighbours can be loud at strange times and blocking out their sound in confined spaces is hard. Cobbled stones are charmingly slippery particularly in damp spots and yes it does rain in winter in Portugal. Narrow streets also mean no parking so carrying heavy shopping and items is unavoidable. Think about all of these factors before you sign on any dotted line. We want you to be happy in your new home and country.

If the daily sound of church bells disturbs you we advise you to do research before moving to your dream of a simple village life in Portugal. If the Village has regular electronically controlled ringing bells they will ring on the hour throughout the day so it’s best to try and be there to hear for yourself. Estate agents don’t usually know if this is the case because they very rarely know the villages that well. Most people don’t even notice the bells ringing and it’s a very useful way to keep track of time, but it’s the kind of unexpected detail many foreigners are surprised by. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Aggregate property websites in Portugal rely on individual property companies to keep their listings up to date. Unfortunately this is not always done and houses that have long since been sold sometimes stay on the for sale pages. We help our clients through this confusion and save them a lot of effort and wasted time.
