🏙️ During , we're highlighting how city-level data can help understand emerging challenges across Europe.

What can wastewater data tell us about ketamine use in European cities?

From 2024 to 2025, ketamine loads detected in wastewater increased by 41%. Of the 66 cities with data for both years, 40 reported an increase.

The highest loads in 2025 were detected in cities in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Cities in the UK showed higher levels than the EU cities with the highest observed loads.

Wastewater monitoring provides a unique local perspective on drug use patterns, helping build a clearer picture of developments across Europe's cities and regions.

🌍 Mental health is everyone's concern.

On World Mental Health Day, it's important to recognise the close connection between mental health and substance use disorders.

Many people experience both but can face fragmented services and substantial barriers to receiving the support they need.

Addressing people with mental health and substance use disorders (‘dual disorders’) means looking beyond individual services and building responses that are integrated, accessible and centred on people's needs.

At the EUDA, we support this effort by bringing together scientific evidence, European experiences and practical guidance for professionals and policymakers.

What can wastewater tell us about drug use in Europe?

From 115 cities across Europe, the latest data reveal some clear shifts between 2024 and 2025:
🔺 Ketamine +41%, the biggest increase
🔺 Co***ne +22%
🔻 M**A −16%
➖ Cannabis remains stable
➖ Amphetamine and methamphetamine show little overall change

And wastewater tells us more than what is being used. It also shows where and when patterns differ. In more than 75% of cities, co***ne and M**A levels are higher at weekends.

How do we stop criminal networks from exploiting vulnerable young people?

The answer goes beyond enforcement. It starts with prevention, support, opportunities and a sense of belonging.

Our Safe Futures project is exploring how young people are recruited into criminal drug networks and what can be done to prevent it.

Today, at the EUCPN's conference in Lisbon, we are launching a new report developed with the University of Limerick's Research Evidence into Policy, Programmes and Practice team, highlighting research priorities for stronger prevention and intervention efforts.
